About this deal

I would’ve thought if your primer had that much radiance to it that you’d have to stick with a sheer coverage foundation, but this really does shine through whatever you put over it. I think, and I stand corrected, that the white film is the filter and acted as both the barrier between the skin and foundation and as the glowing, pearlescent filter that shone through the foundation. Because of this and the fear of looking like a hot mess, I have never used a luminous primer, so this recently launched Becca Backlight Priming Filter intrigued me.

It’s a solid white stuff that’s very alkaline and used in small amounts to adjust the pH of the product and make it just right. So I decided to post these lip swatches (taken in natural lighting) unedited so you can see how the shades really register on my skin tone.

Backlight Priming Filter (30ml, 15ml): Water, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Mica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Tocopheryl Acetate, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Extract, Panthenol, Silica, Carbomer, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, Iron Oxides (CI 77491). I used to use the Becca Sheer Luminous Foundation (original version) and the Foundation Stick many years ago (back in the early 2000s when I was in college and the line was still at Nordstrom).

I feel like the Becca primer does have longer lasting power, as my skin looked dewier with the Becca primer after 12 hours of wear. Beauty boxes – bundles of products and make-up delivered straight to your door via a subscription – are by far the easiest (and most exciting) way to get your style fix, and they make an excellent gift too. Yet another reason I can’t wait to test this out in the summer, because my skin is usually a little more balanced in that season. So this one definitely delivered on the “lit from within” and “radiance booster” claims, and I was very pleased about that. On the flip side the lighter, more subtle glow the Charlotte Tilbury primer gives my skin is better-suited for everyday wear and using with light-medium coverage bases.

Blended together, they result in a first of its kind, lightweight, whipped fluid that creates a smooth canvas and acts as an instant filter. Purveyors of exquisite formulations that deliver realistic radiance, this phenomenal range was allowing the world to look ‘lit from within’ before dewy was even a thing and has scored an abundance of (well-deserved) industry accolades – not to mention a loooong list of glowing reviews from our discerning Cult Community.

Infused with three unique filtering Luminescent Pearls, each one adds a different drop of diffused light.Once applied, I found that the shimmers in the Becca primer look a lot finer on the face, while the shimmers in the Physician’s Formula primer are definitely more apparent up close.

It’s lightweight in texture and while you cannot expect too much of the blurring of ‘imperfections’ (their word, not mine), because that’s a trick of the light that – from something as sheer as this – is only ever going to be nominal. Although these aren’t recommended usages for this product, I have discovered that they work well, and find that finding various uses for products increases their value. Again, the photo above looks smooth, but I don’t think my skin was all that smooth in real life, especially after the 4- or 5-hour mark.Physician’s Formula Spotlight Illuminating Primer: Water/Eau, Dodecane, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Glycerin, Brassica Campestris/Aleurites Fordi Oil Copolymer, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Glyceryl Stearate, Peg-100 Stearate, Polyisobutene, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylene Brassylate, Panthenol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hexylene Glycol, Peg-7 Trimethylolpropane Coconut Ether, Tocopheryl Acetate, Disodium Edta, Sorbitan Isostearate, Retinyl Palmitate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Tin Oxide, Tocopherol, Carmine (Ci 75470), Iron Oxides (Ci 77491), Mica, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891). There is just one catch regarding glabridin and licorice: the amount of glabridin in commercial licorice extracts can vary a lot.
