A water wall is a configuration of containers, tubes and funnels, which children can pour water and observe the way it drips and flows through the containers below until it empties out into a container on the ground. Made from powder coated steel, the Wonder Wall comes ready assembled and is delivered direct to you. Interestingly, the children opted for the animal tubes most of all from a range of materials offered.

Children will need to investigate ways to stop the flow of water on the Damming Station and experiment with sand taken from the nearby Sand Table. I had a piece of scrap lattice which I fastened to the sandbox/playhouse with screws, and I attached the containers by poking holes in them, and securing them to the lattice with long twist ties. You can use it to challenge analytical thinking whilst introducing basic scientific ideas and of course, a lot of wet, splashy fun! Encourage your children to roll up their sleeves, get stuck in, and let their curiosity take the lead with lessons in science, gardening, and creativity. In spring 2012, the school where I was working was filmed for water play – you can see how temporary and packaway the water play was for children of all ages (and it’s a trip down memory lane as I spent 2 years working with the P1 ASN class, some of whom are featured around the guttering in this Learning through Landscapes video).

To do this I tied a piece of elastic onto a bucket, threaded it over the roll holder and tied the other end to the bottom of the pegboard through one of the holes. The down side is that you use up lots of tape to attach stuff – ideally we’d have just used Velcro etc. It's a brilliant tool to stimulate mental exercise, encouraging children's independence and interest in the world around them. With older children constructing walls, it can be good to show them examples of possibilities via a slide show alongside viewing the range of available loose parts available.Timing Games - Let children calculate how long it takes for the water to go from the top of the water wall to the bottom.
