She was the former keyboard player with post-punk eighties band, The Woodentops and joint winner with Graham Swift of The James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction for her first novel, Justine.

Read more about the condition Very Good: A book that has been read and does not look new, but is in excellent condition. It is important that we continue to promote these adverts as our local businesses need as much support as possible during these challenging times. As with her previous work, Thompson’s atmospheric palette is hallucinatory, playing with illusion and reality. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. But Mission Control have hinted that her knowledge will be vital when the ship reaches its destination.

I can see people loving this novella, regardless of my personal opinion, it was a good story and the ending was as I said earlier, unhinged. She is glad to be on this mission because she can trust that all the materials around her are real, unlike the ubiquitous fabricated scenarios of virtual realities on technology-obsessed Earth. The Book Collector throws the essential elements of the gothic chiller into a blender and what emerges is something between pastiche and critique, in which its author never loses sight of the need to give her readers, first and foremost, an unputdownable yarn. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories. For their own good, they are given pills to prevent them from dreaming, because dreams might impact on their sense of reality. At the surface: Artemis is a part of a space mission to get to a new moon to try and find a bacteria that could help consume the carbon in the air on Earth and re-stabilize the environment.

Her ship, the Chimera has been sent to look for organisms that will help assuage Earth's global warming, but it becomes clear on the journey that there are other disturbing reasons for the mission. A fortnight ago, in a newspaper article, Naomi Klein charged proponents of Artificial Intelligence with misappropriating terms from psychology and mysticism to give the impression that “they are in the process of birthing an animate intelligence on the cusp of sparking an evolutionary leap for our species”. There is an intensity in the short chapters and strange characters yet engagement felt oddly detached throughout. With its gothic motifs, this dark portrait of a ‘fairytale’ marriage is full of mystery and suspense… An elegant and bloodily shocking entertainment. but Thompson takes a very distinctive approach, the notion of "dreams as poetic metaphors of thought" allowing for explorations of the nature of consciousness and where it resides, the fear of losing one's identity, the omnipresence of AI, the frightening implications of virtual reality and the suggestion of forces powerful enough to override both machine programming and human nature - all overlapping and interacting with each other in interesting and inventive ways.Humans live their lives plugged into virtual reality, entertained so accepting of this limited lifestyle.

Salt is a small independent publisher and the two books I have read from them have pushed me out of my usual genre in a good way.

Synopsis For disillusioned author Max Long, the offer of a writing-fellowship on the mysterious-sounding ‘Burnt Island’ is a godsend. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
