About this deal

I think the bottle design deserves a special mention too, as it's one of the prettiest bottles I own. Then in the drydown it turns into this wonderful warm, fuzzy veil that is so comforting and just makes you want to keep smelling it for hours and hours. The other week I reported about my fragrant 'estate windfall', whereby I was the lucky recipient of a couple of vintage perfumes my friend found while clearing out his parents' house after his father died. Which, when you realise you have just thirty pages to go - or less, if you have forgotten to factor in the acknowledgements - makes you start to slow down and savour every sentence, or even reread entire paragraphs to postpone the inevitable moment when you set the bookmark to one side and close the cover for the last time. I don't know L'Heure Bleu or Baghari, the other two fragrances it has been compared to, so for me Chanel No5 is the only reference.

So I loitered with intent in a spot where I could keep an eye on people's comings and goings while Freddie got the first round in. I don't remember anything about either L'Origan (I think that was the other one in that set, not sure, they were both crème perfumes, though) or L'Aimant. To me the first 30 or so minutes of L'Aimant actually smells so much like the original Nivea cream in the blue tin that I'm surprised no one else seems to mention that. Fragrances with a lot of aldehydes all smell similar to me when first sprayed but most venture off to do their own thing. It's day wear stuff so it matches up with blouses, dressy shirts, something semi formal or even business formal business casual. For in telling the story of her burgeoning interest in fragrance - of how she fell down the rabbit hole, as we might say - Alyssa is also articulating the stories of so many of us. This is the younger, though grown-up sister of No5, unpretentious, unsophisticated and gentle on the nose and on the skin. Yes there’s plenty of sweetness and something blunt like booze in there too, but rose a go go in the modern version, I wonder if that is what wears away with age…. The first thing I noticed was that the cream had no hint of the delicate pink I was expecting (the original was creamy powder pink).

I feel like the only person who doesn't get Chanel No 5 from this but it's an entirely different fragrance to me. Attars I’m all for and have quite a few that smell every bit as good as rather heavy proced ‘exclusive’ perfumes, but I often wonder in these cases just who’s copying who? This is a perfume for a woman who loves being a woman and smells of womanly smells: roses, soap, and powder.

The tea roses are nearing the end of the season, after last week's rain they are near fermenting in this fervour. Yes, the other day over dinner at their house, Tony whipped out a pink cloth bag containing a purse spray, plus two other tiny miniature perfumes, and announced: "Here you go - there are more where they came from, and I'll fetch the rest when I am up at the house next. A good amount of vanilla and tonka keep it very sweet, powdery, and the vanilla is the major player in the end. Who would have thought that the day would come when I could contemplate the plummy civet and cumin-fest that is the legendary Femme with equanimity. Finding that new favourite or enduring signature scent has never been easier with our extensive range of women’s fragrances.

I can smell the rose and the ylang-ylang, the hint of sandalwood, and maybe some of the other notes. It took me to the 1950's and I'm an adolescent girl in a pink dress and bow, pony tail and putting on make up and lipstick, perfuming my skin and doing my hair up in a French twist for the junior prom. Its floral heart was tight and seamlessly blended, giving the shape rather than the distinct fragrance of jasmine, ylang ylang, carnations, and other flowers I can’t suss out. It feels like a cuddly and friendly version of the ylang-jasmine-rose aldehydic floral (a la no 5) with a slight peachiness and a less green and more vanillic drydown than the Chanel. I happen to love the smell of Elnett hairspray because it reminds me of being 16 and backcombing my hair to oblivion, being very accepting of the sad parts of life and not paying much attention to trying to fit in.I recently had got a new job over the holidays for a short time, and on top of that, birthday and Christmas money, I wanted to finally save and invest in the 6 oz. The fragrances they create now are cheaper to produce and they get the younger generations to associate cheaper ingredients w/ quality. The bar was divided into different levels, with cosy snugs at every turn - sadly all of them taken by early doors revellers. When you consider how our great grandmothers could (if desired) affordably scent themselves in matching cologne, edp, parfum, powder, and creme, it is mind boggling.
