About this deal

Another —who becomes Miles’ ally—is funny and big-hearted Chloe Swanson, a diner waitress who drives a beat-up AMC Pacer and is far more interested in the billionaire’s wellbeing than his money. I thought he did a good job exploring the father-daughter relationship with Chloe and Miles was a well-developed character with a clear redemption arc. He meets the first on the list, Chloe Swanson, and is surprised to discover that they form a bond with each other.

Unfortunately for him, someone wants to stop that from happening and the outcome for his heirs ain’t pretty. Two decades before he became a tech millionaire, Miles Cookson donated his sperm to make ends meet, and as a result, he has nine biological children he has never met. What’s even more baffling is that the homes in which these people live have been scribbled clean, as though any trace of them could prove troubling. I always look forward to Barclay’s work, as it never quite answers all the questions posed in the story, a sort of earwig with which the reader must grapple well after putting the book down at the end. He’s wealthy and used his money to influence the powerful people so that he can get away with committing his sins.Huntingtons is a horrendous disease which has been given a platform to be recognised and in some little way understood.

On page 201 of the hardcover edition of Linwood Barclay’s Find You First, two characters reviewing footage from a homemade documentary see a human hand beneath a dresser in the tiny bedroom of a trailer home. I have been a fan of Linwood Barclay and his thrillers for years, but somehow fell off the bandwagon at some point. The fact that Miles probably fathered as many as nine children opens up the possibility for a sprawling story.

While I enjoy those to a degree, Barclay uses a more spine-tingling approach to present his stories, one that keeps the reader guessing and tripping over all the twists. The cinematic narrative makes it perfect for video adaptation, but don't wait for the movie or the series.

His two novels for children – Chase and Escape – star a computer-enhanced dog named Chipper who’s on the run from the evil organization that turned him into a super-pup. My favorite character was definitely Chloe, a young woman who was in the midst of making a documentary about her family tree. Chloe, however, is undaunted and her fearless spirit coupled with her level-headedness makes her an extremely likeable character almost immediately. This is my first book by Linwood Barclay and now that I've read this one, I'm going to go back and look at his other work. Many of his books have been optioned for film and TV, and Linwood wrote the screenplay for the film based on his bestselling novel Never Saw It Coming. The other day,” he said, “I wanted to put one foot in front of the other, something as simple as that, and my brain was like, no way, Jose. Then, each chapter creates more uncertainty and tension that has you wanting to read just one more chapter before you have to get back to life. Linwood Barclay's novels - as intelligent as Michael Connelly's, as compelling as Harlan Coben's - never fail to astonish.
