I have very fond memories of listening to this on story cassette when I was much younger and was very excited to find this beautiful hardback edition. I heartily recommend this book to parents of children in the appropriate age range, as well as to adults who retain their own childlike sense of adventure and love of animals. Like many good children's tales, the story of Gobbolino will give younger readers cheers and make them wonder. It is beautifully written, and I love it now as an adult as much as I did 30 years ago when I read it the first time. Coming to it at the age I am now, I found it repetitive and rather exasperating--the cat does nothing but cry all the time.

A story book I'll share as it think it's a wonderful story to be read aloud on a dark stormy bedtime! He tries to be a normal kitchen cat, first at a farm, then an orphanage, then the mayor's house, but his magic always gets him into trouble.I like the circular nature of the tale, as Gobbolino begins his journey with the river and ends at the river. Whether this is because the author's skill improved in the four years between the two books or because cats are easier to anthropomorphize than wooden toys, is a matter for debate. Born to a witch's cat, Gobbolino wants nothing more than to find a home amongst the warmth and bustle of a kitchen. I agree with a friend of mine who said the ending can also be read as a tale of trade-offs and concession.
