The pictures and the written words together tell the story, and the illustrations and their meanings are as important as the text. I discovered it when I was younger, and had no idea that not only was it still in print, but that there were a whole string of books that came after it! The story follows the assembly of a pack of dogs going to the park, and ends when they're all scared off by a fearsome cat - Scarface Claw. Some of these favourites take centre stage in their own books such as Schnitzel von Krumm, Dogs Never Climb Trees, meaning there is plenty to discover for fans of the dimunitive dog and his friends.

Written for pre-school children, it has become a classic bedtime storybook in New Zealand and Australia, [3] [4] [5] and Lynley Dodd's books, including this one, dominate the children's section of the Premier New Zealand Bestsellers list. A great story, with a colourful cast of dogs ranging from Hercules Morse (‘as big as a horse’) to Muffin McClay (‘a bundle of hay’) and the eponymous Hairy Maclary, from Donaldson’s Dairy. es el primer título; quizás como lectura aislada sea aburrido porque repite mucho los nombres de cada perro, hay que valorar la serie en su conjunto. Hairy Maclary and Friends is a series of children's picture books created by New Zealand author and illustrator Dame Lynley Dodd. Each dog has it's own rhyming couplet (eg, Hairy Maclary, from Donaldson's Dairy - Hercules Morse, as big as a horse) and as each extra dog joins we start the cumulative list again from the top, in the same way as There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly.and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy" accompany a series of illustrations showing Hairy Maclary sniffing the bottom of a lamp-post, burrowing into a hedge, barking at some birds and raiding a garbage can. When Hairy Maclary bounces and pounces his way into the cat show, his flustering and blustering bring a very unexpected result .

Hairy Maclary, everyone's favourite dog, is busy chasing and hustling all the neighbourhood cats from Slinky Malinki to Pimpernel Pugh. The Hairy Maclary books are picture books that are designed to be shared by an adult reader and a young child. The animals are well drawn but as I explored the series I noticed that Lynley Dodd is most reluctant to draw human faces and goes to great lengths to plan out the illustrations so that humans are viewed without their faces showing, just showing their feet seems her usual trick, it's interesting to see how she tackles this challenge in each book in the series. But there's just something about this little dog, nothing but a pile of hair, marching down the street, collecting all his friends, like Hercules Morse, as big as a horse, only to be chased away by the vicious Slinky Malinki!

Lynley Dodd graduated from the Elam School of Art in Auckland with a diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture. Hairy Maclary is a bouncy, scruffy and mischievous dog whose cheeky adventures with his lovable animal friends (and enemies!

He's great and the rhymes in this rhyming book are easy to read and never feel like hard work to read again and again. The brilliantly clever rhyme and vivid, engaging pictures have made this story into a children's classic, beloved for over 40 years - and it's still one of the most popular picture books today. Now you can meet them too in this frolicking, rollicking little library - a perfect introduction to the many adventures of Hairy Maclary and friends and just right for tiny fingers and little hands!
