About this deal

It's unquestionably one of the most powerful phones around and there's little you could throw at it to slow it down. On the back, the P20 Pro has the benefit of keeping its camera sensors along the side to provide more real estate for those great gradient colour options, but the Mate 20 Pro’s centralised square-pattern nub is kind of a unique new approach, too. This means that you could potentially charge up your friend's ailing iPhone or give your wireless buds a boost. It’s a good bet that the OLED screen is brighter than the 820 nits its less-powered sibling, the Mate 20, is capable of, but we don’t have an official word from Huawei.

That camera also doubles up as an extreme macro shooter, which is a cute and unusual feature, and it works well.

Rating it on its camera benchmarks with a score of 109, it was, at the time, the highest score the site had ever awarded. But I must say it's a real shame Huawei was banned because this is legitimately the best phone I've ever used.

In conclusion, the S9 was deemed to be a better "all-round" phone, but the P20 Pro was best for users who wanted the "most versatile" cameras of a current smartphone. It's likely that individual services will need to enable the face unlock to work for authentication -- much like with Apple's Face ID. It’s a powerful smartphone with three rear cameras and a distinct yet reserved style, but its bold signature is a handful of neat tricks (like an in-screen fingerprint sensor) that are finally coming to mainstream phones. Unlike previous Huawei phones, it does not include a monochrome lens for contrast adjustment and greyscale images, with the company citing improvements to the colour sensors as making it redundant. If you missed the Huawei P20 Pro earlier this year, you’re in luck: the Mate 20 Pro is a better version in nearly every way. You’ve got the in-display fingerprint sensor, 3D face recognition, a powerful processor, fantastic screen, wireless charging and even the ability to wirelessly charge other devices. Usually, it involves limiting screen brightness and contrast, disabling location services, restricting connectivity, and turning off nonessential apps. It’ll even charge other wirelessly-charged phones that are stacked on the back, which is… a very niche addition.

The Mate 20 Pro is a smorgasbord of advanced features smushed into a beautiful, slim and light beast of a phone. The Mate 20 features three rear-facing cameras with Leica optics in a square-shaped array, with the Mate 20 Pro using 40-megapixel wide angle IMX600, 20-megapixel ultra wide angle, and 8-megapixel telephoto sensors, and the Mate 20 using 12-megapixel, 16-megapixel ultra wide angle, and 8-megapixel telephoto sensors.

You have to be a bit more precise with your finger placement, and it isn’t as quick as Huawei’s recent capacitive fingerprint scanners, but it still works great. The new Huawei Mate 20 Pro is undoubtedly leaps and bounds better than last year’s strong, but now thoroughly dated-looking Mate 10 Pro, packing in a dazzling new design along with loads of top-end tech.

whereby the camera recognises what it's looking at ("trees" or "blue sky," for example) and adjusts the settings accordingly.

There’s also 3D live emojis using the front-facing camera to mimic your expressions in cutesy characters just like Apple’s Animoji. The camera is packed full of modes and many of the features are AI-powered, helping you get the best out of your photos, but perhaps what’s most notable is the night mode, as this thing can take far more impressive low light shots than most smartphones. These specs are about on par with other flagship smartphones, though the Kirin 980 is speedier than Snapdragon 845 which first appeared in a phone earlier in March.
