It is spoiled in its description of the actual fighting by frequent descents into flippant asides and 'witty' reflections. There wasn't a bad actor in the whole production but Ethan Kai as the taciturn, unhappy Frank stood out for me.

Detailed accounts of troops and Field Marshals leading up to the war and all of the major battles, personal struggles of the troops in combat, effects of the vast amount of weaponry used for the first time in such a war, and it goes into some of the politics of the war that led to its end. Her army had stood by her then, and was now trying desperately to improve, as it had to face Frederick the Great, the master-soldier of the era. Showalter surveys an army at the heart of a national identity, driven by - yet also defeated by - warfare in the modern age, that struggled to capitalize on its victories, and ultimately forgot the lessons of its defeat.

The script was poor and from the outset, as I heard the awful and cliched line, " For you ze vawr iz over!

Now behind German barbed wire and oppression, Cline and his fellow POWs must find a way to bond together to not just survive but transcend their captivity. Now behind Nazi barbed wire, Cline and his fellow POWs must find a way to not just survive but to transcend their captivity. This is due in part to the musical magic powers of Mark Isham, whose work you may have heard in countless soundtracks including A River Runs Through It and October Sky.

The army provides an important view of 18th Century Bohemia, Hungary, Croatia, Lombardy, Belgium and Austria. Meanwhile Frank, the most reserved of the prisoners, ends up delivering some of the most powerful lines of the movie when he discusses meeting the family of someone he killed, challenging the belief that anyone is the good guy when it comes to war.In 1995, he donated it to Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City, where it was played by Glenn Dicterow of the New York Philharmonic during a ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier. Conscription, taxation, constitutional change, bureaucracy, logistics, all of these dominated countries that never witnessed a campaign. I feel there is not a soul on earth that hasn't somehow been affected by cancer and can relate, on some level, to this film. Of course, Showalter could have included much more, but that is not the point of this work (he has written much on the army of the Kaiserreich and I'd recommend his other books for a more granular perspective).

Obviously no large orchestral recitals would take place here, but individuals or small groups of musicians would try to lighten the gloom. The structure of the army, the life of its soldiers, its strengths and weaknesses, the personalities that gave it such a unique character, from top to bottom, are all considered. One of those shots was an interior lit by a single candle, the perfect situation for the Cooke 5/i range that all feature T1.
