About this deal

A friend recommended this book and I listened to the audio version, surprised at how much I loved it. A lot of my own thoughts and feelings without any of his highs and for that matter (hopefully) lows are reflected in his words. The exploits of Tufnell (another bowler of 'lovely loopy stuff'), Atherton, Hussain et al, are given extra import through the eyes of a cricket-obsessed youth. This had a very similar literary style to the Broken Greek by Pete Paphides although it is none the worse for that. Articulate, intensely personal at times and a beautiful reflection of life’s trials, tribulations and personal neuroses.

In 1964, Nell Dunn spoke to nine of her friends over a bottle of wine about sex, work, money, babies, freedom and love. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

Felix's charmingly written voyage of self-discovery through cricket and music reminds us of the power in understanding the hands we are dealt, and how the journey itself is one to embrace. A beautifully evocative book about the three most important things in the world: love, sport and music. I’ve never written a book review before, but felt compelled to do so for Felix White’s wonderful autobiographical book. To be able to weave these three topics together so beautifully and seamlessly is quite a skill - there’s something here for everyone, and don’t be put off if you don’t watch cricket!

I can't imagine what it is like to lose a parent prematurely and at a relatively young age, however these raw and emotional sections are insightful, honest and beautifully written.Last Chance Texaco is the first-ever no-holds-barred account of the life of two-time Grammy Award-winner Rickie Lee Jones, in her own words. With his infectious passion for the sport and vivid observations, you don't have to like cricket to love this. It offers a sense of genuine empathy and understanding not just with cricket fans, but sports and music fans across the world, in articulating our reasons for pouring so much meaning into something that we simply cannot control. And, through the prism of her extraordinary experiences, she offers vital insights into the nature of race, class, feminism, sexuality and ageing in modern Britain. I felt a real connection to Felix whilst reading this book as the beautiful fusion of both music and cricket is embedded within the grief of his mother.

Neither of his parents - from Lebanon and the Isle of Wight - were into the game, so it is a slight mystery to everyone that he took to it as much as he did. Not that it's a bad book; on the contrary, it's interesting and quite well written, but the other two main strands in the narrative heavily outweigh that concerning his erstwhile band. The way Felix touches on both the comedic and tragic elements of the sport through descriptions of his 'cricket cave' hit close to home at points. An autobiography of Felix White that features interviews with cricketers who featured in games or just moments that impacted his life. The novelist Ann Quin says she appears to be a ‘singular girl, singular and single’ but questions the use she makes of her freedom. I laughed and cried and like Felix cricket has been a part of my life (for over fifty years) Cricket is so often a metaphor for life and can be a tremendous force for good (check out cricketwithoutboundarie. I also enjoyed the interviews he did with former test players from across many cricket playing nations. So many of us want to be a rockstar, date a rockstar and have famous friends on their phone and Felix has had all that.
