He was tested recently to ascertain his reading age and at 8y6m his results came out at 10y6m so ORT obviously did something good! The two clean-cut stars of the original reading books are still there, but they have been updated for today's world. The Janet and John books were originally based on the Alice and Jerry series published by Row Peterson and Company in the United States, a series that had been written by Mabel O'Donnell and illustrated by Florence and Margaret Hoopes.

After the books fell out of fashion they became a target for ridicule on the basis of their stilted diction and overwhelmingly middle-class content. I suddenly had a little epiphany: all the books we own, both read and unread, are the fullest expression of self we have at our disposal. I found an old book my sister or brother had had in school, but I don't think there were any characters in it. So I became my own reading group, and took out books from the school library to read while the other kids got the "Jack And Janet" series.In fact, Janet and John, two of the best-known characters in English literature, have been missing for around 25 years now.

Since Dick and Jane wer suburban children they didn't have a lot in common with us, who weremostly children of farmers or loggers. Originally published in the UK by James Nisbet and Co in 1949 the Janet and John reading scheme was one of the first to use the “look and say” approach. Funilly enough my son learned to read recently and it seamed to just "happen", he seamed to be oblivious to the process and just put all the letters together effortlessly. Turning off the personalized advertising setting won’t stop you from seeing Etsy ads, but it may make the ads you see less relevant or more repetitive. But just try and remember where I put my book/hairbrush/bankcard/pen/important telephone number/hot cup of tea.
