About this deal

Results with TrixBrix R72 curves (only 45 degrees of curve each way because that's what I have available). For the metal axles I tried to get some into the axle hole on the wheel as well as on the axle where it goes through the holder. Injection moulding really does give a better finish than even the decent 3D printers that TrixBrix use. TLDR: my wagon with one pair of metal axles is significantly faster than the one with all plastic axles.

I assume from this point on the used grease / oil is more important for ball bearings in LEGO train wheel sets. These dummy wheels are needed if you build a long section of train wheels which should be able to run on curved LEGO train track. Here is a short video showing construction of a four wheel tank engine using all LEGO power function parts (motor, battery and IR receiver) and four medium wheels with o-rings. It looks like the "record train" in the video had about 4 9v train motors at the front, but it is still impressive given the forces they overcame. The fixed technic axle drivers have grooves worn into the flanges where they rub against the rails in the curves.

The photos of the scales have had the display area curves blown out so you can actually read the display in the video. The wheel holder is mainly available in black but was also produced in grey and light bluish grey for some sets. One bearing arrived in pieces, and just generally the Lego axles+wheels I have don't stick together very well so picking up a model generally means half the wheels fall off. The only reason I wrote "eternity" is that I had many trams and passanger cars (each of them has at least 200g load for each axle) running on a permanent display between 2017 and 2021 (with some lockdown months). These wheels are attached to a wheel holder 2x4 brick ( Brick, Modified 2 x 4 with Wheels Holder Old at Bricklink). My cars are 7wide, the solution using technic bricks requires covering the wheels, but this will exceed 7wide. I simply do not believe that the split axles, without any support in the center, will take the load from above in the long run.

I use the original LEGO train wheel axle, this axle is usually a little bit thicker than the hole of the ball bearing, so I created my own techniques and tools to get the ball bearings assembled to the metal axle. I'm sure exact results would change as you make the cars heavier but the general trend probably doesn't change. During these days from LEGO only standard wheels were available which didn't work well to build a steam engine.

Similar in design and size to the discontinued 57878 train wheel by LEGO, these wheels fit standard metal axles much more tightly - no gluing required! I didn't say the independent plastic wheels are superior in general, just the limited target scenario of a single kid with a single city set for the short period of time that the parents are still paying attention to the new purchase/gift.

In your experiment, you used straight track and gravity to accelarate - since metal axles have less friction and mechanic resistance at all and there is no curve resistance, they will perform better. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. What I like about your solution is that the ball bearings are further out than the solution from Legopold. The wagons are 24 studs long with 16x1+8x1 or 12x1 bricks on one layer, then 6x1 bricks across those on top.November 2019 Now Bigger then ever: XXL wheels now available in red, black, dark gray, light gray and dark red. We design and 3D print LEGO compatible wheels and LEGO compatible rods to help further the LEGO train hobby. If you use a self build Power Functions drive train you can power your engine right throught these train wheels.
