About this deal

Moominpappa at Sea marks the definitive point where Tove Jansson stopped writing for children and more for adults. Na szczęście Mama Muminka bez pudła trafiła w samo sedno i przywróciła mi chociaż część wiary w ludzkość.

Moominsummer Madness is the transitional work and Moominpappa At Sea is the best of the later works. The struggle of growing up, fighting loneliness, desire to understand oneself, the feeling of uprootedness, personal failure, it's all in there cleverly disguised as a children's story. In fact, he is starting to see the world as more than black and white, as he comes to understand the threatening but not really evil Groke. There was the sea – his sea – going past, wave after wave, foaming recklessly, raging furiously, but, somehow, tranquil at the same time. We kept reading, even if something about the long lighthouse island days just didn't have the same magic as the earlier books. And let us not forget that Mamma is so quietly unsettled by life in the lighthouse that she paints herself into the walls .

It is also implied (I think, anyway) that Moominmamma is either currently suffering from a reasonably serious illness or is in recovery from one, as nobody will let her do anything or exert herself in any way. After Tove Jansson's death, the producer of the 1990 Moomin television series, Dennis Livson, planned to make a film adaptation based on Moominpappa at Sea, but Tove Jansson's niece Sophia Jansson did not give him permission for the adaptation. Tove Jansson wrote and illustrated her first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), during World War II. Still some strange moments of magic and wonder, of course, but tempered by cynicism and a warm-but-realistic sense of the petty and no-so-petty impulses that drive people. She drew her first Moomin in the 1930s, just for fun, and in 1945 he became a character in a children's story. There's only one other person living on the island: a strange and lonely fisherman who may be the key to understanding this curious, melancholy place where they live now. Jansson's illustration show the Moomins as tiny figures in a huge landscape, surrounded by sea and sky.The book is notable for its introspective and contemplative tone, which is in contrast to the other books found within the Moomin series. She is also the author of eleven novels and short-story collections for adults, including The Summer Book and The True Deceiver. So he takes his family off to start a new life in a lighthouse on a tiny, rocky island far out to sea. But how is Moominmamma to grow her flowers and what could have happened to the last keeper of the lighthouse?
