If you work organic compost or dried, chopped leaves into well-draining garden soil before planting your azalea shrubs, this may be all of the fertilizer for azaleas that's required.

For azaleas, a soil test every 3 to 4 years is essential, if for nothing other than to monitor the soil’s pH and determine when to fertilize azaleas in your garden. Alkaline soils lack available iron, an essential nutrient for acid loving plants, which is locked up by the soil’s high pH. A soil test also gives results on the amount of available nutrients and informs you how to make necessary adjustments. These shrubs, well-loved for their early showy blooms, are not difficult to grow provided you plant them in soil with the correct pH level of 4. If dry concentrate or concentrated solution falls onto plants or surfaces, rinse thoroughly with water straight away.
