I didn't notice when I first read them, but it's obvious now from the illustrations that there's a biggish time gap between the first and third books. Today I chose Carbonel about the Prince of Cats and his adventures with Rosemary and John to free him from a binding Silent Magic spell so he can reclaim his throne.First published in 1955, it is the story of Rosemary, who lives with her widowed mother in a boarding house. The British did this sort of thing particularly well; the heart of the book is always in the right place, but doesn't becomes sappy because of the dash of clear-eyed reality never far from the action. I suppose that we owe the Harry Potter books a debt of gratitude for making children's fantasy so popular once again that there has been a new market for modern reprints of the books of the 1950s.

I first read this many years ago and recently re-purchased at the ripe old age of 51, for the sheer pleasure of re-reading one of my all time favourite books.The early ones from the time of Queen Victoria had been cast in copper, but the more recent ones were made of bronze. The most notorious example is changing the title of the first novel from “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” to “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”.
