About this deal

best copper i ever saw was a ½" pipe going to a radiator on a landing in an old lady's house after she died. Dried polish that has been left in nooks and crannies should also be washed out with as toothbrush, helped perhaps by the end of a soft wooden tooth pick. As part of the cleaning or polishing techniques, the use of metal polishes are long associated with copper and brass. So I designed and built this copper pipe table and are in the process of now building the wooden top but want to prevent the copper from tarnishing as much as possible. It is best to recoat before any tarnish or oxidation is seen or at the first sight of slight colour change.

Photo at right shows where the old coating has been removed with a varnish stripper to enable cleaning/polishing.Well, I am not an expert on this but as lacquers are a form of plastic coating I would think that it might be affected by direct heat. If you go this route your local PPG jobber should be able to suppy you with all of the relevant PPG data sheets which will spell out precisely what you need to do. Proprietary cleaners branded for cleaning up the outside of copper cookware normally have to contain powdered abrasive to make them effective.

Be sure to calculate coating requirement according to the recommended number of coats for the item you are coating. Use Everbrite™ for Copper Roofs, Building Cladding, Spouting and Downpipes, Weather Vanes, Capping, Fittings and Outdoor Sculptures. If you want to coat copper while it is still new and shiny, clean any oil or other contaminants from the metal . Lightly tarnished surfaces should be cleaned with a good quality metal polish, which must then be removed with warm soapy water. As a general rule of thumb you use Everbrite™ Protective Coating for Copper Outdoors; and ProtectaClear® for Copper Indoors. I am resistant to this because i oxidsed a lot of my jewellery, and pro pads remove oxidised patinas. Clean, polish or patina your copper to the desired finish and then coat with Everbrite™ or ProtectaClear® or CrobialCoat™ to stop tarnish and to lock in the shine and patina on your copper fittings and hardware – indoors and outdoors. Common household and proprietary products are available that can be used to clean copper and brass without the need for muscular effort. Hold Tableau Anti-Tarnish Lacquer can upside down and spray for one second to clear nozzle after use.

Looking at my PPG product data sheet book I see that they spec out brass and copper in the same section as aluminum that is to be clear coated. Shake Tableau Anti-Tarnish Lacquer can thoroughly and spray a light even coat from approximately 20cm. Under normal circumstances and with good ventilation the coating will be well cured after 4 to 5 days. Rad pipes top out at about 90deg, most condensing systems with suitably sizes rads, more like 65 these days.

Not sure if I need the clear lacquer or just keep them polished with brasso, there are only 2 pipes about 5m for one and 4m for the other? ProtectaClear is an easy to apply, tough, clear protective coating used for copper that gets a lot of handling that will keep your looking like you just finished polishing it. If possible objects such as letterboxes should be removed from the door so that at least one coat of lacquer can be applied to the edges of the reverse side.

However the coating is delicate until fully cured, which can take up to 3 to 4 weeks depending upon the number of coats applied. Spray on the lacquer but don't go mad as drips will accumulate, it is better to pass over the pipes several times lightly to build up a good coat of lacquer! Pickling clean in an acid solution can be used with great care but is not recommended in domestic environments. Dries to a completely clear colourless film preventing the oxidisation and tarnishing of brass, copper, bronze and silver.

The above two methods do not get the job done for you, then you may have to use commercial lacquer thinner. The surface of the lacquer gives a bright but shallow reflection clearly different to the deep glow of a good polish but is acceptable for much domestic hardware and electrical fittings.
