As for what you can cook with them, air-fryer chicken breasts, halloumi, doughnuts, buffalo cauliflower wings and, of course, air fried chips can all be made using air crisp functions. The benefits of a dual-zone air fryer are obvious: make your tater tots on one side and your salmon on the other, cooked to time and temp independently of one another all at once. It's a fairly hefty appliance, so if your kitchen is compact it may not be for you, but you can fill its two drawers with different foods and sync the programmes so everything is ready to eat at the same time – a process we found intuitive on test. It’s very big and a bit more complex to master, but if you’re looking to cook a whole meal at once, for example both roast a chicken and fry up chips at the same time, you won’t find a more comprehensive air fryer out there. This multi-cooker's top feature is that it only has one lid, unlike many that need one for pressure cooking and one for everything else (including the Instant Pot above).
We had no issues mastering the basic functions, though the controls are dimly-lit so can be difficult to read. The size accommodates a 12-inch homemade pizza, a rotisserie chicken, or even a 9 x 13 snacking cake for baking. In comparison to deep-fat frying, air-frying is a healthier alternative – using convection cooking rather than oil means there's less fat in the finished food, which in turn means fewer calories.Our salmon fillet also had even browning, crisp skin and a good crust on the top, but the real winner was chicken breast, which was among some of the best air-fryer chicken we've ever tasted: juicy, tender and packed with flavour. It also cooked chips in a respectable 22 minutes (two minutes faster than the promised 24) and delivered fluffy fairy cakes. The lid is hinged, rather than removable, which our tester found slightly awkward to use, and may make under-cupboard storage tricky. We’ve noticed that in the second or even third generation of products, some items with the same name have changed from the first models we tried in the initial boom of the air fryer phenomenon. The buttons are responsive, it’s compact for storage in smaller kitchens and it’s lightweight enough to move around.
This smart fryer has ample room to prepare a family dinner and boasts a whopping 13 cooking modes, including steak, seafood and frozen food. For families who are serious about investing in a multi-use tool that can handle dozens of functions and be on permanent display on the countertop, the Breville is the best choice. Its match function also lets you use the same settings for both drawers – although we noticed our fairy cakes were cooked to slightly different levels on test.However, if you need to use an air fryer multiple times to make enough food to feed your household, you’re probably better off cooking everything in one go in the oven.

In test, we loved how easy it was to use, and though it looks quite chunky, it's versatile and relatively quiet while it cooks. Luckily, this didn’t impact the finished dishes too much – our chicken was juicy and our chips were the perfect texture inside, if a little unevenly browned. The digital display didn’t always respond well to our touch and we’d have liked an indicator light to show the fryer was heated and ready to cook. It has a pre-heat cycle which can make it more efficient at quickly crisping foods (the fries, wings, and shrimp fared well). Always check the size as the capacity varies enormously – important if you’re feeding the masses or just want dinner for one.
