About this deal

The first half of the book follows this and the eventual start of the rebellion by Boudicca and Macro as senior centurion at Colchester has to deal with the fallout.

Two of Rome's finest commanders - Prefect Cato and Centurion Macro - are charged with a mission as deadly as any they have faced in their long careers. What is to follow as a whole is a fantastic and action-packed Roman adventure, in which Boudica's revolt with the annihilation of Camulodunum as just the beginning of a much greater rebellion that will probably continue in the next volume towards its inevitable end and the destruction of the druid stronghold Mona will be the main focuses, but during these bloody actions in Camulodunum Macro will lose some very dear family members, from the likes of the mute boy Parvus and the dog Cassius towards fellow soldiers and in particular the spy/assassin Apollonius, and all this due to an act of madness by the Roman procurator, Decianus. and how his wife Queen Boudicca turned took the reigns of power all is well until the procurator demands payment of taxes. This is Roman empire military fiction, starting with the second invasion of Britain, and continuing with subsequent adventures in every corner of the empire. After twenty one novels featuring the central characters, it could be that there is a tired feeling to the story but that is far from the case and I certainly look forward to the next novel in the series.

That, and a quote from the king of historical action-adventure fiction Bernard Cornwell that 'I really don't need this kind of competition . A background beat is how individuals and their personal wishes and feelings are overplayed by historical forces, in other words, people are swept along. He mounts an assault on the island of Mona, taking Prefect Cato with him to utilise his knowledge and experience of fighting in Britannia. I have read a couple of Simon Scarrow’s books in the past which I’ve very much enjoyed, although this is the first I’ve read in his extraordinarily long running Eagles of the Empire series. absolutely brilliant but now I'm sad I have to wait for the next one as this series has been phenomenal, Macro and Cato have been two of the best characters I've ever had the pleasure to read . Meanwhile, Cato has been sent northwest to harry and conquer once and for all the Druids and their followers. Governor Suetonius is making an attempt to finally conquer Britannia by defeating the Ordovices and the druids on the Isle of Mona and he wants Cato to assist him.

The novel begins with Cato and Macro in the colony of Camulodunum enjoying (more or less) retirement, but then fate in the person of Boudicea knocks on their door. It's good stuff and everything you could want, but be warned, this ends on a cliff-hanger so everything is not resolved in this book. HNS Awards have helped discover and launch the author careers of Michel Faber, Ruth Downie, Hilary Green, Martin Sutton, Kelleigh Greenberg-Jephcott, Nikki Marmery, Margaret Skea, Warwick Cairns, Katherine Mezzacappa and Elizabeth Macneal. Although, part of a series, this is the first that I have read and it worked well as a standalone novel. I suspect the only way to get ahead of him is to pay an Author to give me the first draft of any Roman novel.Sadly, this book doesn't really stand alone, so reading some of the earlier volumes in the series would be helpful. I have enjoyed reading this series and this is definitely one of the best and had a satisfying ending. When the self-serving procurator, Catus Decianus, is over zealous in gathering taxes from the local population and allows atrocities to be carried out on Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni, and her daughters, he provokes a rebellion on a scale never seen before and putting all Roman settlers and citizens at risk.

Macro and Cato each face deadly battles against enemies who would rather die than succumb to Roman rule. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The lead-up to the revolt is described well, and the veniality of imperial officials and the emperor is laid out as if the precarious fate of the expensive province of Britain—"Should I stay or should I go? His Roman soldier heroes Cato and Macro made their debut in 2000 in UNDER THE EAGLE, and have subsequently appeared in many bestsellers in the Eagles of the Empire series, including CENTURION, INVICTUS and DAY OF THE CAESARS. The tales follow the life and careers of Centurion Lucius Cornelius Macro and Prefect Quintus Licinius Cato.Their insistence that the conquered isles will benefit and should be grateful eerily echoes the arguments of the much later British Empire. Both Cato and Macro find themselves under the command of men whose actions they doubt or whose motives they distrust.
