About this deal

The De-nibbing Pad should also be used when you have applied your last coat of finish to finish the job off feeling extra smooth. The three dimensional structure of the pads is easy to use on contoured surfaces and profiles, as well as areas which are difficult to reach. This positioning, alongside our focus on sustainability and preserving the environment, resounds through all we do. Also I presume I would need to get a sanding block for the Abranet pads too as I currently just have a sander and nothing to do hand sanding with apart from my hands. The purpose of doing this between coats is to smooth down any raised grain or imperfections that have occurred from the first application.

Its really just a light going over the surface to remove any lose nibs or particles that managed to get in or under the first coat of oil. Mirka Mirlon Denibbing pads are a cost effective, and economical alternative to steel wool (they are sometimes referred to as synthetic steel wool), abrasive cloth and abrasive papers. Denibbing is a process to remove nibs -when a varnish is applied to wood the grain is raised so it feels rough when the varnish has dried -hence the need for fine abrasive (abrasive isnt made wit sand these days! To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Denibbing is the removal of “nibs” and imperfections from your finish, and it should be performed between each coat of any finish applied. And not sure about oil, but for paint and varnish, use a tack cloth before every coat/after denibbing (though I have heard that they can leave a residue that affects some finishes, though personally I've never noticed that). Now you can apply your next coat of finish in the same way as you did before, wait for it to full dry again.

I've done very little oil finishing, but with paint and varnish of any sort, on wood or metal, I find 600 grit wet n dry (maybe used wet, maybe dry, depends on the parent material) by hand wrapped around a cork block the way to go. Also as the instructions on the tin say to sand the bare wood to 120 grit so I would need to use the same grit between coats and then like 600 grit after the final coat? I like the finest of the paint sanding sponges as they'll handle eased edges, curves and flat surfaces. We’re incredibly proud of the worldwide range of respected users who believe in and rely upon our furniture restoration services including Harrods, Rolls Royce, Four Seasons Hotels, the NHS, and the Royal Air Force. Because you are roughing up the surface as well it’ll improve the adhesion of any further coats too.Aluminium Oxide abrasive ('Green' general purpose and 'Red' very fine pads), Silicon Carbide abrasive ('Grey' ultra fine pads), Phenolic resin bonded to nylon fibre pad. You don't need to apply much pressure at all while you're sanding - just go over it very gently, and do it in the direction of the wood grain, unless it's MDF or something that doesn't have a wood grain ofcourse. Lots of professional finishers de-nib with just a coarse rag like Hessian, or use a bit of scrunched up brown paper. Can a Floor Sander Drum be used with a fine grain or would this be too heavy handed and strip the finish? I saw that denibbing is recommended with fiddes hardwax oil, how do you do this for a large area such as a floor?

Finishing Pads, also known as De-nibbing Pads are used to sand finishes down in between applications of finish (Oil, Paint, Varnish) to help create a much smoother finish at the end. Basic purpose is to remove/flatten any minute specs of dust, etc, that were airborne and have settled while the finish was drying, and/or any specs of rubbish that were in the liquid finish as you applied it (though you do strain your material through a coffee filter and old pair of ladies tights before EVERY use, don't you?

The Farécla Denibbing block has a removable 35mm interface pad allowing firm pressure to be applied if necessary.
