Formed in August 1999 by Simon Bradbury, David Lester, and Eric Ouellette, the company focuses on historic real-time strategy games for the PC and Macintosh systems. Despite the uneven success of some of its games, the studio continues to develop new games and has sold over seven million copies to date. Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it.

You get to decide what kind of jobs you want to take on, how illegal and immoral you want to be (if at all), and enjoy geeking out in the ‘Verse with your fellow Browncoats. There is some sense of luck involved, both in the flipping of cards while flying through the ‘Verse and in the roll of a dice while completing cards from the Misbehave deck, but many of those can be mitigated with the right combination of crew, ship upgrades, and items. I knew my wife would love it, being able to get Kaylee quicker and because she rarely flew to the rim planets on the expanded board anyway. The game contains two distinct miniature game pieces for each crew member, one in Casual relaxed pose, the other in a Heroic action pose.

I love the show, and this game evokes the theme very well even if you don’t pay attention to the names of the jobs or the scenarios flipped on the Misbehave cards. Made from polypropolyne soft rubber the items that came with mine are malformed and damaged very badly. We’ve played the base game countless times, and even went back to about ten plays with just the base game last year to get recalibrated to the basic gameplay. The game’s open-ended structure sees players racing to be the first to complete the objectives set by one of 23 possible story cards, which add variety to each playthrough’s setup and goals.

While I may not be able to stop you from completing your job, I can sure has heck try and finish mine first. In Firefly: The Game, based on the popular Firefly television series created by Joss Whedon, players captain their own Firefly-class transport ship, traveling the 'Verse with a handpicked crew of fighters, mechanics and other travelers. GF9’s “Vera” Edition Game Mat debuted as a show-exclusive special this year at Gen Con and was an overwhelming success!
