The Gel-Trabuco trainers also feature ASICS' signature Gel cushioning system in the heel and forefoot, which helps absorb shock and reduce impact during the running stride.

Equipped with a DUOMAX™ support system that creates a more stable ride, this placement of foam on the medial side of the midsole offers a firmer density that keeps the foot from rotating inward too much (overpronation). However, there is a lack of rock protection with a relatively low stack height of 22mm at the rear and 15mm up front. The toe box is regular, so not narrow or squashing the little toe, but not so roomy that you can splay them out like in the dedicated wide-fit Altra Mont Blanc BOAs.

Having said that, the GEL-Trabuco 10 is a very robust, well-made shoe with ample padding for roads yet enough grip (4mm deep lugs from the imaginatively named AsicsGrip) for moderately muddy tracks and trails (anything muddier and you’ll need to choose some more dedicated mud running shoes). The fit of the Asics GEL-Trabuco 10 is slightly long, but only a little – I would recommend trying on a half-size smaller than you usually wear if you can, just in case, but probably stick with your usual size if that option isn’t available. The foot lands on outside of heel, then rolls inward (pronates) excessively, transferring weight to inner edge instead of ball of the foot. The enhanced ventilation of the fabric provides quick drainage when stepping in puddles and streams out on the trail to keep you fast and light and to enhance drying time to avoid uncomfortable damp feet. This combined with the stripy hot pink and black laces (that handily squish into the elastic lace garage on the tongue) and design details make these a very attractive pair of trainers in some catch all colours for a lot of runners. The fit is more snug and race ready for shorter distances and I would pick the Lyte for all distances in less technical terrain under the marathon distance.
