About this deal

Thank you to the author and his publisher for allowing me to read a proof of this novel in advance of publication. The story seems somewhat steeped in darkness, cruelty and the grimness of an era we would rather forget, until we are intrigued by the miniature man that Old Ma Bogey keeps in a glass dome on her desk. However, life in the forest, where Pa Herne determines that Wick should be a Forest Keeper, is full of wonder and magic. A book that will spark younger readers imaginations, and I loved the little guides at the back with information about habitats and things they can do to help etc, carrying on the story in their own ways I really thought that was great! Wick must prove himself to the Hobs and help them solve a serious problem that is threatening to destroy their homes and maybe even their entire species.

Yet it is all that Wick’s ever known; the porridge meals, chalked floor bed and fear of Ma Bogey’s iron-thumbed stick.Guided by the Hobs, Wick discovers that he has a special role to play in saving the environment and all who live in it from the forces of evil. Grateful for the kindness shown to their stolen child, they offer Wick the chance of a lifetime – escape from Harklights and begin a new life with them in the wild… Winner of the Joan Aiken Future Classics Prize, Harklights is a magical story celebrating family, friendship and the natural world, filled with a message of hope for our times. There's nothing wrong, in principle, with attractively presenting children's literature - whatever gets kids reading is fine by me.

Therefore, when Wick is offered a chance by a tiny group of grateful Hobs, after he saves their baby, he is quick to take it. You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! Appreciated that not everything was black and white (though some things were) and that not every character had a fairy tale ending (though some did). Follow his adventures as he overcomes his fear of heights and grows in confidence thanks to Papa Herne’s encouragement. This would be a wonderful way to bring the story’s events to life in the classroom by challenging learners to get involved in their own Wildlife Watch. In the endpapers of the novel, Tilley challenges his readers to become ‘Forest Keepers’ themselves by getting involved with the Woodland Trust ( www. Bookwagon loves the gentle lore that Tim Tilley invites us to share with Wick and then his evocative illustrations.

Tilley, an avid nature-lover himself, provides an accessible story for younger readers to delve into, with rich opportunities to open up discussions about how we can look after our natural world. What’s more, we know how much Wick longs to have the sort of family he discovers for we’ve some idea of the horrors he’s experienced. But one day he encounters the Hobs, little people who have big hearts and they go on an adventure together, helping one another along the way. Harklights, despite being very competent and readable, doesn't really do anything new and comes across like a shadow of better books, both past and contemporary. After being released, they sprout trees beneath the circus causing it to be rise to the canopies, never to be used again. The tensions that arise from leaving his friends behind, conquering his fears, overcoming the suspicions of certain hobs and learning the extent of Harklights’ destructive plans are what drives the story forward until the explosive climax.
