About this deal

Look it over, and if you see a little spot or a blemish just rub it right off before it becomes permanent.

If you try to repair the lawn with a leatherjacket infestation still in the soil, they will just eat the new grass! To be effective, the nematodes require soil that is well drained but moist and with a minimum temperature of 12°C (54°F). Leatherjackets tend to hatch during the autumn, so visible damage from leatherjackets in your lawn may appear in November or December, depending on the scale of the problem.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Hope this guide helps you understand why it’s important to clean and condition a leather jacket at least once a year. If your lawn has suffered severely from Leatherjacket damage, and the number of Leatherjacket larvae within the soil is high, multiple applications of nematodes will be required to gain overall control. As the daddy long legs emerge, they start to lay their eggs back in infected lawns starting the whole cycle again - the next generation of leatherjackets hatch within 2 weeks. A conditioner should be applied to the leather about once a year, depending on how much use the jacket gets.Repeat these instructions for an introduction of a second nematode sachet application 7 days after the first application. If the jacket seems to soak up the conditioner quickly and still appears slightly dry, apply another round. This can be used on all leather types, but go gently if using on Aniline and Nappa prouducts, and wash the Magic Sponge in warm water after use. Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer should be applied when the soil temperature is above 12oC 54oF and the leatherjackets are at the correct stage in their life cycle.

If your jacket is heavily soiled, you may want to try a bit of dish soap with warm water and use a washcloth to clean. The most effective solution is to either cover the whole lawn (or just the affected area) overnight with black plastic sheeting – this encourages the grubs to come to the surface so they can be brushed off and destroyed. For our Aniline and Nappa leather (smooth finish), we recommend applying our Protection Cream to your new leather before use. As a result it is important to note that the required application rate is higher for the spring window compared to the late summer into autumn window. The lawn also needs to be kept moist for nematodes to penetrate the soil and reach the Leatherjackets. This is where we tell you not to throw an investment-level jacket on a pile of clothes — or worse, the floor — after you wear it.

Cleaning and conditioning a leather jacket will not only extend its life expectancy but also make it look great! Maturity comes slower than that and while this may sound silly, I think one of the marks of manhood is the first time you pay top dollar for a pair of quality, durable, head-turning boots. The symptoms of an attack are that grass growth slows and yellow patches appear PLUS the grass easily pulled up with little or no root growth. It’s important to note that you probably don’t really need to clean your jacket if it’s just been subjected to regular city wear.

Leatherjackets usually have a one-year life cycle which starts when the female lays her eggs in the lawn around September, they hatch 2-3 weeks later. Once you are done with your spot test, apply Leather Honey Leather Conditioner to a lint-free cloth and coat the jacket evenly. Amongst those creatures are the good microbes that help grass plants survive and the nasties that cause problems for us if they get out of control.
