About this deal

An incredible read of adventure and life that will draw you in and inspire you to pursue your own journeys. Toby's outrageously fearless spirit and good humour will not fail to uplift and spur you on to pursue your own adventures. Sounds like he had an amazing ability to connect with people where ever he was and bring them into his challenge. I loved this book - the storytelling is magical the images and environments it paints so vividly are beautiful. Exceptionally beautiful and moving, a book that conjures connection to people, places and the ocean with the immediacy, grace and clarity of a kayak cutting through sea spray.

Use this tool to build your own journey or choose from an exciting range of specially selected tours. As enduring as any ancient Scandinavian saga, this is a candidly honest tale of a risk-laden, yet existentially meaningful and powerful sea kayaking project.

A manifesto for living, loving and laughing full-heartedly, whatever life's storms and forecasts bring. I enjoyed looking at the maps at the start of the book and they helped me make sense of things throughout the story. But the goal of kayaking all areas was unfilled due to his untimely death at the age of 40 from cancer.

The adventure continues on to the Faroe Islands, Norway, Denmark, Germany, France and Spain, he faces dangerous seas often and instead of backing down or taking risks he uses a sensible head and constantly makes the right decisions, an incredible ability to read the sea. From the wildness and the peace of the sea, looking back at the land, Toby hoped to gain the strength and balance he knew nature could provide and to discover the things that anchor us to each other. A mesmerising and poignant story that shares how the sea can bring together people, places and purpose.

The book itself has humour and sadness too in it but overall people would enjoy the journey through the pages. Katie Carr is a British author, artist, educator and coach who never imagined her first book having anything to do with sea kayaking.

The ending is moving even though I knew it was coming I was rooting for a different ending for Toby. Not a book I would have picked, I was gifted this and felt that I should read it - I am so very glad that I did.At the beginning of this adventure Toby didn’t know that he would die before he completed it, but the death of his brother and having a life limiting condition drove him to grab life by the proverbial horns. The trip is done in stages over a few years, the longest section was the coast of France and Spain and it is near the end of this section that there is a shift in Toby’s mood, whether it was realising he was having to go back to real life or when he realised he hadn’t thought of his brother for a few days or maybe it wasn’t Toby but this reader sensing the end of the book but it was like some of the colour had drained out of the world.

One of the most moving parts of the book for me was how you get a real insight into this man’s unique and mind-bending take on life. The best chapters were the first ones and I guess that was because they were written by Toby, who experienced these places himself. The sort of adventure I've often dreamed of late at night, with additional layers of poignancy and love. I read this wonderful book often with a lump in my throat, many tears in my eyes and a racing pulse, because of the pure adventure of his inspirational physical and emotional endeavours. And to create a lasting legacy to an explorer, an adventurer, brother, friend, colleague is the most beautiful gift to the memory of an intrepid, incredible man.Having seen the map I was amazed by the scale of his project, doing all these areas in a tiny wee boat? The authors’ light touch when describing his heath problems don’t hide the fact that this is also a very sad tale, but one in which hope and joy shine through. A beautiful, poignant but ultimately uplifting reminder to us that life is an adventure and we need to snatch every minute before it's gone.
