About this deal

In many European countries, including Spain and Italy, the biretta is still used as an academic cap, as an alternative to the mortarboard that is used in Britain, the USA and elsewhere. However, both styles of caps were unpopular and quickly fell into disuse – though they are still worn by some undergraduates and officials in the Office of the Registrar. Around the 18 th century, hoods were added to capes and gowns worn by academics as a symbol of higher intelligence and superiority. In the UK and the US, it is commonly referred to informally in conjunction with an academic gown as a "cap and gown".

Newcastle University has a similar tale, in which graduates from Durham University threw away their hats to the River Tyne as an act of independence. For example, if you are 5'5 (167cms) tall and of average stature, please chose the gown that is for someone of 5'3-5'6 (161cm-170cm).

Today, they remain a colourful piece representing one’s field of study as well as level of academic achievements. The biretta itself may have been a development of the Roman pileus quadratus, a type of skullcap with superposed square and tump (meaning small mound). This has led to urban legends in universities in the United Kingdom and Ireland which have as a common theme the idea that the wearing of the cap was abandoned in protest at the admission of women to the university.

The design of the mortarboard itself continues to evolve, with softer caps introduced in recent years to give a more comfortable fit, and the recent introduction of caps designed to fit over a headscarf being offered at some universities. Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. This style, the pileus rotundus, was adopted mainly by university students studying law, medicine, and the sciences. Our Graduation Hats and Mortarboards are perfect for all graduation ceremonies, whether you have just completed your early years of education or if you have worked for many years to achieve your PhD or Doctorate! Our mortarboard caps are made from a combination of wool and polyester and include elasticated sides for comfort and fit. The shape of the biretta cap was gradually adapted in some countries, including Britain, with the flat square section on top becoming wider and more angular until it eventually came to resemble the modern-day mortarboard.

I measured myself as the max 54cm on the small cap but still very glad I went for the small option, as it fits well with a bit of room available. The tudor bonnet is made in a circular design whereas the graduation tam is made in a hexagonal or octagonal shape. When you are graduating with a PhD, the cap you wear can vary from a typical tudor bonnet all the way to a doctoral tam. In particular, women undergraduates who exercise the right to wear a soft Canterbury cap must wear it on their head, rather than carrying it. Ideal for all types of Children's Graduation ceremonies including Primary and Secondary, our matt finish mortarboards are very popular.By the 14th century, pileus caps were becoming taller and more cylindrical, similar to a modern chef’s hat but shorter.
