About this deal

The idea that thin equals healthy, and that fat people are lazy and just need to stop eating so much and just try to be healthy were instilled in me so much while growing up that it's really hard to let go of them. I felt so tense when reading about that night that I had to set the book down more than once to calm down before continuing.

But even if I hadn't connected with Butter, I would have kept reading, because the concept makes this book impossible to put down.Artisanal butter may be the latest foodie trend, but the familiar yellow stick from the supermarket has a worthy backstory as well. Like more nuanced than just “I’m just that misunderstood kid and if anyone really got to know me I’d be the popular one. But he never goes to the nurse before lunch to get that checked, or to take insulin before binging on his lunch.

And I can't just sit back and ignore that this book, which tries SO HARD to give an accurate view of what it's like to be big, plays diabetes off like it's just a side thing.Actually, I think stories like these are just good to remind us all, regardless of age, that compassion is much-needed in this world.

I was completely and utterly horrified to read how margarine was originally made, "from rendering oil from caul fat of beef". Through over 130 original recipes, James presents some of his favourite new dishes and classics – everything from savoury delights like Butter-poached lobster, French onion soup, Chicken with ’nduja butter and Dover sole meunière, to sweet treats including Cinnamon bread with caramel butter dip, Shortbread and Baklava. The book keeps you guessing right until the end, but in a morbid, car-crash way you can’t stop reading because you really need to know how it will all end, for Butter and for the kids at school who have taunted him and tormented him until he feels there’s no other way out. You don’t see any consequences for what happened in the book- maybe they happens after the book ends? While the process of making butter hasn't changed much over the years, the many different ways to do so and the different flavor profiles make for fascinating reading.
