The atlas Camberwell Beauty had most probably hibernated in Sussex but I’d say that yours had migrated very recently from northern Europe where they’re resident – the fine weather and northerly winds of the last few days certainly would have helped.

Despite not turning up for a couple of hundred years, the Camberwell Beauty has become something of a mascot for the area. A large number of food-plant plants was recorded, such as willow ( Salix nigra, Salix pentandra, Salix caprea, Salix aurita, Salix cinerea, Salix phylicifolia), American elm, hackberry, hawthorn, wild rose, Betula species ( Betula verrucosa, Betula chinensis), Alnus incana and poplar. The caterpillars, up to 5cm long when mature, are velvety black with raised white dots and rows of red spots and spines down the middle of their backs. By the end of August there had been over 80 reports from Britain, especially from East Anglia and as far north as the east coast of Tyne and Wear.

Despite the abundance of its foodplant in Ireland, it would appear that our wet winters prevent this species from overwintering successfully.As things jump about from chapter to chapter it is also a job to keep up but was it worth bothering to work out who was who and when was when?
