About this deal

Given its prominence as a hallmark for domestication and its indication of breed identity, we devote the remainder of this review to a discussion of our current understanding of canine skull diversity and its mechanistic underpinnings as they relate to domestication, genetics, and disease. After that, the skull was CT-scanned by staff in the Diagnostic Imaging Service at Edinburgh University’s Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies – although they hit a snag when they needed to record the patient's age, as their system only goes up to 999! A montage of canine craniofacial shape demonstrates the incredible morphologic diversity of Canis familiaris.

However, dogs may have been domesticated from wolves multiple times, and this breed of Siberian dog may have actually gone extinct, rather than serving as an ancestor for modern dogs. Despite interspecific differences in the mammalian and teleost head structures, the genetic pathways that regulate vertebrate craniofacial development are highly conserved across both species ( Schilling 1997; Szabo-Rogers et al. Although it would have been a domesticated dog, its features are reminiscent of the European grey wolf. Dogs were the first species to be domesticated by hunter-gatherers over 15,000 years ago before the development of agriculture. In 1975, a team of Russian archaeologists announced that they’d made a remarkable find: From a cave in the Altai Mountains of Siberia, they’d unearthed a 33,000-year-old fossil skull that resembled a wolf.Whole-genome sequencing may provide the answer, although the analysis of such data is still enormously challenging and arguably less well suited to detect structural variants such as copy number variants and tandem repeats. Unlike people who have a relatively standard size and shape to the skull, we have bred dogs to have a wide variety of skull shapes and sizes. This real canine skull offers an opportunity to study the anatomy of Canis domesticus (domestic dog) in close detail.

Aside from boosting statistical power, crossbreed comparisons benefit fine mapping, as interbreed-associated haplotypes are inevitably smaller than intrabreed-associated haplotypes. Gnash your fangs and dash round the great fire dance, blurring the lines between wolf and man under the pale moonlight. As proof of principle, during the 40 years it took to domesticate silver foxes, in a well-documented experiment performed in Novosibirsk, Russia, changes in cranial dimensions, among other morphologic features, were also noted as a correlate to tameness ( Trut 1999; Zeder 2012). But how such selection could work on a grand scale was not immediately appreciated and attempts to parse the genetic mechanisms that dictate how canine traits such as skull shape are passed from parents to offspring were not formally studied until decades later.A dolichocephalic morphology is exactly what one would predict based on the relationship between morphology and ecology/hunting behavior of wild canids.

The resulting high forehead may be connected to the importance of facial expression in social interactions between wolves, a possible reason for dogs’ ability to bond with humans and no doubt linked to the emphasis of these bones in child-substitute toy dogs. The skull has the excellent surface detail typical of ESP skulls, is robust enough for students to handle and easily cleaned with soapy water. These dogs usually have the same number of teeth as other dogs but have much less room for them in their mouth, which predisposes them to periodontal disease and buildup of plaque and calculus. Previously, many have suggested that the first domestication occurred in the Middle East or East Asia, but this skull could force scientists to rethink their theories.
