About this deal

His English father remained in Paraguay as a political rebel and, aside from a single hand-delivered letter, they never hear from him again. When the police deadline is about to expire, Plarr goes out to talk with them, with Leon shooting him in his leg.

Despite Plarr warning the dissidents that Fortnum has no value to the authorities, the group proceed with their demand for the release of ten political prisoners. Retitled from The Honorary Consul and sold in America with one of Paramount’s sleaziest ad campaigns, John MacKenzie and Christopher Hampton’s adaptation of a Graham Greene novel features a fine Michael Caine performance, but prefers to stress sex scenes between star Richard Gere and Elpidia Carrillo. During the Dirty War, a half-English doctor in Argentina befriends the police, the rebels and the alcoholic Honorary British Consul, whose Latino wife he seduces. Great performances from Michael Caine and Bob Hoskins, not so great from Richard Gere but a good supporting cast make this an enjoyable hour and three quarters entertainment. He accepts the fact that he is not the father of the baby, and even suggests naming the child Eduardo, after Plarr.Plarr's mother, once a beauty and now bloated, along with some of his previous mistresses, attends his funeral. This is a mildly interesting picture for viewers who like a hint of subtlety to spice their viewing experience. Visiting the town brothel with Saavedra, Plarr is attracted to a girl, Clara, but she is taken by another man. Along the way he meets an array of people, including British Consul Charley Fortnum, a representative in Latin America who is trying to keep Revolution from occurring.

So many times his mother had used the word when he was a child; it was like the threat of an armed robber.Nonetheless, he finds himself obsessed by Clara and seduces her with a pair of highly decorative sunglasses. The book was made into the 1983 film The Honorary Consul (also released as Beyond the Limit), directed by John Mackenzie, with Richard Gere as Plarr and Michael Caine as Fortnum. Now a practicing doctor in a small Argentinian city, Plarr is approached by an old friend who tells him he's working with the Paraguayan underground and a disgraced British counsel (Michael Caine) on a plan to kidnap an ambassador and hold him for ransom in exchange for the release of Parr's father and several other prisoners.

Plarr is again summoned to the shack, this time to treat Fortnum for a gunshot wound sustained while trying to flee from a latrine. They tell Plarr his father is alive and in a jail in Paraguay, and that they have a plot for which a doctor's assistance is needed to kidnap the US Ambassador on his trip to Corrientes to see ruins.
