About this deal

I do like the author, he is part of the mixed cultural and religious staff of Charlie Hebdo, he overcame his upbringing by acknowledging the truth and letting go of racism and hatred.

His father is quite Western and modern in some ways, but also retains much of the values and prejudices he acquired as a child, and like all kids born into cultures not of their parents, the author grapples with these contradictions. Die Geschichte ist trocken, detailreich und liebevoll erzählt und gezeichnet, dabei entsteht viel Humor. It is not often that we get an insider look into the lives of ordinary people from these parts of the world, and I hope the author's other works will also be translated into English. The most ambitious and most accomplished work by Riad Sattouf, The Arab of the Future is long-awaited by the press and the public. Riad encounters severe bullying, in which two cousins accuse him of being Jewish and mercilessly torment him—seemingly because of his blond hair and foreign mother. This book gives us a micro-view of complex and continuing barriers when identifying normative behavior from differing cultural perspectives. In the same vein as Maus by Art Spiegelman and Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, The Arab of the Future is an autobiographical and political graphic novel.

Although he was studying to become a pilot, he applied to study at École Pivaut and then Gobelins L'Ecole de L'Image to study animation. We get glimpses into the poverty and chaos of Syria and Libya and the contrasts between middle eastern and French lifestyles and cultures of that time. Moving into filmmaking, he directed his first film entitled Les Beaux Gosses (also known by its English title The French Kissers).

Just a couple of quotes from the book because it illustrates so well how the Arab PR is not only to convince the outside world that their version of history and events of the Israeli-Palestinian situation is the correct one, facts be damned, but also to persuade themselves that any memories they have of the actual events are false. Most of the more horrific aspects are somewhat glazed over; the stories are told through the eyes of Sattouf as tiny kid.

Also writing for the Times, Laila Lalami highlights the book's portrayal of Sattouf's father, and his gradual and uneven path from a young idealist to an authoritarian, yet impotent, hypocrite.

At this point in the book, the inner voice bubble turns white and is thereafter inhabited only by Riad. In 2010, Angoulême International Comics Festival's Prize for Best Album for Pascal Brutal, volume 3, Plus fort que les plus forts (Fluide Glacial). We laughed and then he introduced his adorable little boy… and it goes without saying that I have my casting! Moving from France to Libya to a family compound in Syria, cultural and marital cracks begin to appear in this volume. En 1984, la famille déménage en Syrie et rejoint le berceau des Sattouf, un petit village près de Homs.

The reader easily shuttles back and forth between naïve and knowing perspectives, the two combined in the space of a frame. Prime Minister Muammar Gaddafi has abolished private property, meaning all unoccupied housing is free for the taking.
