Among the benefits that are claimed for the planar magnetic design are that they present an easy load for headphone amps, and that they have a much lower level of distortion than you’d find in a typical moving-coil headphone. It is great to see Audeze respond to clear flaw shown in measurements and fix the egregious rough/cancellation that existed in the older design. Of course, the LCD3 is a true craftsmanship gem, feeling more luxurious and definitely more expensive than its younger brother, but it sacrifices those factors for comfort. They both have equally good detail retrieval but HD800S has stronger, more forward instrument definition. Since Audeze introduced the LCD-X in 2013, it has become the gold standard of the professional audio world.
It could have never been achieved with a dynamic driver, as you really need that typical planar resolution and highly-textured sound to achieve that kind of treble response. Talking of headphone amps, I tried the LCD-Xs on a number of different systems, and the only one I felt wasn’t doing them justice was the one built into my MacBook, which seemed unable to deliver the bottom octave.
