As the maroons threatened Spanish commerce and trade, Spanish officials began to fear a maroon takeover of the island. It is also far too long at almost 3 hours long; it could have been told in an 1:50 minutes just as easily. Lakeview was established as a Freedmen's town by a group of African-American runaway slaves and freedmen who immigrated from North Carolina shortly after the War of 1812. Expeditions in 1740, 1742, 1746, 1757 and 1761 had minor successes against these maroons, but failed to destroy their hideaways.
