About this deal

La cosa arranca ya a los bifes: en uno de los sempiternos enfrentamientos de Batman con El Joker, el encapotado se harta y lo mata.

This is a great Batman book of the late 80's (not on the same level as Year One or The Killing Joke, but still very good).

Book three of a four-issue series, "Escape" finds a weary Batman (with help from Robin) doing just that: escaping from Deacon Joseph Blackfire's religious cult. Aspects of The Cult can be seen in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, a story about an urban uprising from the sewers and Batman’s attempts to rebuild himself to save Gotham.

Grant Morrison did the same thing in RIP and I think that's part of what makes these two books great. This is made even more horrifying when Batman realizes that he is actually hallucinating in a room full of dead bodies with a real gun in his hand. There are many unintended parallels with the rise of the populist right across the USA and to a lesser, although increasingly evident, extent in the UK.The dynamic duo battle through legions of Underworlders until the Batman finally confronts Deacon Blackfire in single combat in an arena. How and why this particularly depraved villain broke Batman is why this book is such a page turner and considered to be controversial. Michael : Unfortunately I don’t think it’s totally out of the realm of believability that some citizens wouldn’t leave Gotham once Blackfire takes it over. I promise we’ll talk more about the ending later, but I want to focus on the homeless attacking criminals for a second because I think this is a really raw, disturbing, and unexpected aspect of this book.

This is Batman at his lowest and it takes a good 50 pages for him to recover even after he's free of the cult. So paramount is this story that its details—despotic state, underground army, lynchings, blown bridges—partly inspired Nolan’s third Batman film. The art is okay but the colors make it look jaded and a bit boring to read sometimes but you gotta stick it out as it leads to some interesting stuff with Bruce and how he is breaking down and still manages to fight and in the end maybe save his city but we never really got a full origin of this villain. Some of the actions that are taken are definitely mean, but it’s the villains committing or influencing these actions. These similarities are often a point of criticism of the story, as some argue that Starlin took the wrong lessons from Miller’s work. Most nerds love super-heroes because of their super-human strength, can fly or have pimp green rings. That said, it gets easier as you go, and while the finale wasn’t as ponderous or as impactful as the fantastic first two issues, I felt there was a decent enough connective tissue throughout the arc. The two eventually escape to Wayne manor where they can finally eat and recuperate from the trauma they endured. Here though, it feels like many members of the community turn into “monsters” (Batman’s words) for little reason, and the “mass brainwashing” they allude to doesn’t really hold up to me as a good justification, after spending so much time on the individual brainwashing of Batman. Militaries Are Useless: The Gotham National Guard is sent underground to deal with Blackfire's cult but are wiped out as they were scattered in three-man details who are easily overwhelmed in the tunnels. When next he wakes, he finds himself chained underground, held captive by a religious cult led by Deacon Joseph Blackfire, who in his religious fervor, is determined to clean up Gotham by eradicating the criminal element.I think there could have been a better outcome, and I’d almost be willing to bet that the team probably considered having Batman save the woman…but then you’d have to figure out what to do with her afterwards since they go directly into the sewer. So much so, that he was kind of eager to kill him off in A Death in the Family, already convinced that readers would vote for Jason’s death. I don’t think anyone would have cared about plausibility at this point in the book, so he could have easily just had Batman go down and save her real quick.
