About this deal

This is what Zora does and also really the way she expresses her love for the city and also her emotions towards it.

Beginning with an analysis of the current political moment, Brown delves into how Baltimore's history influenced actions in sister cities like St.This was a challenging read (and suffered from being a book I owned and therefor was not under a library due date to finish). This compelling trilogy is the story of a mother's struggle with substance addiction, domestic violence, and the foster care system.

this was a great read, especially if you are interested in the history of American structural racism and displacement/segregation, and/or the city of Baltimore and racism. In the Black Butterfly Series, pen is placed on unspoken realities that youth may experience in foster care. As the assault deepens and everything they love is laid to waste, black ashes floating over the rooftops, Zora and her friends are forced to rebuild themselves, over and over. This is the third book in my quest to read all of the shortlisted books for this year's Women's Prize for Fiction. Describing the myriad policies that have created the crises of apartheid in Baltimore, this book analyzes the dilemma of African Americans living in hypersegregated cities while proposing new solutions. Told from Zora’s POV, the use of third-person helped remind me that this beautifully written, descriptive, heartbreaking, and reflective story wasn’t a memoir!

The location of bike shares and Zip cars, green space, and the layout of the light rail all tend to serve the White L while underserving the Black Butterfly. is specific to Baltimore, but I viewed that easily as an in-depth case study, which is also kept conceptually to larger issues that are relevant to everywhere in the country where a black neighborhood exists.

I appreciate how the book was broken into different focus areas but I felt at times was really repetitive and I wasn’t learning anything new. I was appreciative of an opportunity to read about a period in history I knew absolutely nothing about.
