It's not bothersome to have two different densities, but in all honesty, I don't see the point in having a dual-density foam when the singular version works perfectly fine. I’d try them both on, but if you’re looking for a good, solid, old school feeling running shoe, you’d be happy with the 880. Always good to know that we aren’t crazy :-) I absolutely can see a benefit from the stacking of Fresh Foam X and Feulcell in the shape they chose: the result is a small but significant improvement in toe-off as well as what I believe is better compression resistance than, say, the Beacon. The full-length Fresh Foam keeps the cushioning consistent and improves the transition in the gait cycle. Version 12 retains the same 10 mm drop with a dual-density midsole with a new softer Fresh Foam, and added upfront FuelCell which is a slightly more dense upgrade giving a bit more energy through toe off.New runners looking for a neutral trainer may want to check out the 880v12 thanks to its more traditional geometry, softer Fresh Foam X, and comfortable yet secure upper. New Balance’s use of soft less dense Fresh Foam X at the heel combined with the same hardness/firmness but denser Fuel Cell up front with its well segmented copious outsole is effective. Some runners have doubts about the cushioning, which is more effective at a leisurely pace and less so at higher speeds.
