About this deal
Much like the Christmastime it has nothing to do with, ‘Daemon’s Roost’ is a mixture of pleasures and annoyances, none of them new to the show.
With his health failing, Clore has summoned home his stepdaughter Alison, to finally share with her the chilling truth of what happened to her family there when she was a child. We do, however, get treated to a genuine red herring that fools both Creek and probably many playing along at home.
The home was also once owned by Jacob Surtees who, 150 years ago (or so, it wasn’t quite clear), reputedly burned men in a fiery furnace which he threw them into with his demonic powers. She’s the main link to Creek, with her husband Stephen Belkin the centre of one of Creek previous cases, ‘The Striped Unicorn’, albeit not previously seen by the viewer.
Through various hammy acting and vocal sound effects he tracks down and threatens Creek, before drawing a knife and forcing the detective to trap him in a fiery pit, left, presumably, to die.Photograph: Mark Mainz/BBC View image in fullscreen Lovely, silly wordplay … Alan Davies and Sarah Alexander in Jonathan Creek. We are told that Creek had assisted Alison’s husband Stephen Belkin 6 years previously with what has come to be known as ‘The Striped Unicorn Affair’.
