About this deal

Slaughter is the founder of the Save the Libraries project—a nonprofit organization established to support libraries and library programming. I was not the biggest fan of Pieces of Her, it was my least favorite of her books, but I loved where she took Andrea in this book. She was desperate for another moment, another breath, so that her last words to her little girl would not be a lie. There are a multitude of skeletons in cupboards that will be discovered as Andy’s investigation continues and it makes you wonder how different things could have been if people had just been willing to put the truth out there. There were also some elements to her backstory that weren’t fully explored, however, I think these might have been contained in ‘Pieces of Her’ which I hadn’t realised was the first book in the series.

I mostly love Karin Slaughter books and I liked pieces of her but I have no idea why she thought Andrea was a strong enough character to hold a sequel or interesting enough to warrant one.I have made a similar observation when reviewing Karin Slaughter's writing previously, so it does appear to be a deliberate stylistic choice on her part. Probably because we hear about crooked politicians every day on the news, so nothing shocks me anymore. I listened to half of this as an audiobook, and Kathleen Early does a great job with her narration, as she did with Pieces of Her (and all of Slaughter's books for that matter). The case remains open as no one was ever convicted so Andrea see’s this as a perfect chance to uncover the truth.

Nobody was ever convicted – her friends closed ranks, her family shut themselves off in their grief, the town moved on – so the killer is still out there. As the two women move towards the finale, the intricate dance of their journeys is tangibly interconnected even over the decades separating them. Yet, Andrea has another assignment and it is to find out the killer of the judge's daughter, Emily Vaughn. You know that the book you hold in your hands is going to hit all of the marks of character, plot, storyline and setting. She has matured and her actions and general behaviour now match her age, making the whole experience a less frustrating one. Andrea's main interest is tied to her dad, Clayton Morrow, who is spending time in prison for several crimes and thought to be the culprit in the murder of Emily. Having been in jail for the last thirty three years he now has a chance of parole at his next hearing, unless he can be charged with further crimes. The ending is good too, it’s plausible and nicely set up for book number three and I’d like to see how that plays out.

For the diner scene at the end, she hasn’t taken her work phone with her even though it’s the climax with all the arrest warrants etc. Karin Slaughter brilliantly captures the American small-town vibe, with the strong claustrophobic nature of Longbill Beach emanating off the pages. The ever-popular crime novelist is back with another pulse-pounding standalone, this one considering the twisted relationship between a mother and a daughter after the latter realizes she may not know the woman who gave birth to her at all. Andrea had struggled to find her place in the world since she found out two years prior that her parents were not who she thought they were. It was a real bonus to see Andrea start to flourish which I hope continues as this series progresses. While I’m sad that I have to wait for another book in the fantastic Will Trent and Sara Linton series, it was nice revisiting the characters first introduced in Pieces of Her (now a limited series on Netflix). Emily was much like her mother, Judge Esther Vaughn, in that they both excelled at everything they did and had no concept of how to deal with failure. You'll go in thinking you have everything figured out, only to realize you haven't even scratched the surface.

S. Marshal Andrea Oliver, assigned to her first federal case: the protection of a federal judge receiving death threats. One final chance to uncover a killer… Andrea Oliver arrives in town with a simple assignment: to protect a judge receiving death threats. Almost all of the side characters in Emily’s narrative were awful, hideous human beings, which made her narrative particularly difficult to read. She is not perfect and makes mistakes, but, like Emily, she has the strength of character and courage to follow her convictions. I read and reviewed Pieces of Her in 2018 and was, admittedly, frustrated by a weakness I felt was present in Andrea Oliver’s character.Karin Slaughter has brought back her Andrea Oliver character in this tense thriller, first seen in Pieces of Her, which I didn't read.
