Steenbergs Organic Aniseed Powder is ground from the fruits of organic anise plants - and has a mild licorice flavour that is used in baking. It is a key ingredient in Mexican atole de anís or champurrado, which is similar to hot chocolate, and it is taken as a digestive after meals in India.

Anise star pods are hotter, more pungent, more bitter, and much more Ì_åÌ_‰̴ۡå̱licorice-likeÌ_åÌ_‰̴ۡÕå than the European anise. Ground aniseed, also known as anise powder, is derived from the seeds of the anise plant (Pimpinella anisum) and has a distinctive licorice-like flavour. Bake into sweet and savoury breads, cakes and biscuits or infuse in hot water and drink as an effective digestive tea. Stir into rice recipes (especially stir fries) or use to flavour fruit salads, pickles, and chutneys.

The seeds, whole or ground, are used in a wide variety of regional and ethnic confectioneries, including black jelly beans, British aniseed balls, Australian humbugs, New Zealand aniseed wheels, Italian pizzelle, German Pfeffernüsse and Springerle, Austrian Anisbögen, Netherland muisjes, New Mexican bizcochitos, and Peruvian picarones. They grow up to 45 feet tall, produce fruit for up to 100 years and their flowers are a yellowish green tinged with pink. High in antioxidants, vitamin B, and minerals such as calcium, potassium, and copper means ground aniseed can increase resistance and circulation. The star anise, as its full name sounds, is characterized by a sweeter, more delicate flavor than its Far Eastern counterpart. Baking: Ground aniseed is frequently used in baking, particularly in traditional recipes for cookies, cakes, and bread.

Organic ground aniseed is a sweet spice that complements sweet baked goods really well, and is very commonly used in biscuits and cakes in Germany and Italy.

Pickling and preserving: Ground aniseed can be added to pickling brines or used in preserving fruits and vegetables.

In combination with vanilla, it will enrich the flavor of sponge cakes, cream cake, macaroons, meringue and marzipan. It is worth adding ground anise to cakes and homemade sweets, mixing it with the remaining ingredients. If this spice currently isn’t in your home, then you’re doing convenient cooking, and baking all wrong!
