About this deal

It took water well, tasting younger as the water knocked out some of the peat, adding more cereal and mulchy grass.

I rather like the Arran distillery, producing some of my favourite SMWS whiskies as they have, and I really liked my last bottle of this that I tried. We recommend that you do not rely solely on the information presented here and that you always read labels, warnings, and directions before using or consuming a product. It’s every bit as impressive as the big brands we tried, and comes in a very giftable presentation tube. As someone who only usually likes scotches with a slight warm/salty character (Bunnahabhain, talisker, springbank), I was determined to try and purchase a really good "normal" scotch and enjoy it. With candied citrus peel, a dollop of sweet caramel, vanilla and some interesting fennel and peppercorn notes, there’s a lot to love.As I don’t think I’ve written about whisky enough recently (sarchasm) I thought I’d put something down on paper/the screen/the interwebnets about Whisky Live London 2011.

It is made up of whiskies that have been finished in 6 different cask types – port, madeira, marsala, cabernet sauvignon, Knob Creek bourbon and oloroso sherry – for 2-6 years depending on the type of wood (with the port taking 6). Its American The presentation is as appealing as its taste, and the fact that it’s non-chiller filtered makes it unique and complex. With water more wood popped out and the fruit turned to candy, with sticky boiled sweets behind the oak.

Tasting the complexity and assurance of this youngster it is difficult to believe that the distillery only opened in 1995. Having decided that they needed more control over the grinding of the barley a mill and silo were built on site in 2007, allowing less frequent deliveries and grinding on the premises. The classic Arran citrus notes have rounded with age and reveal new depths of character against a background of sweet oak. It’s not uncommon for supermarkets to have their own single malts but usually they’re labelled ‘ASDA’s Islay Single Malt’ or ‘Sainsbury’s Speyside Single Malt’. I went along to his show in London this year, at which everyone seemed to know him and he knew almost all of them, and it was rather good.

Rather nice and further demonstrating that blends needn’t all be rubbish, grain heavy, Tesco’s shelf filler. It definitely needed some time to breathe, having a harsh edge, but it quickly softened (especially when poured through my newly acquired wine aerater [thankyou Dave’nLet] which worked much better than we had imagined) and was a nice, spicy, fruity wine, complimenting the pud better than expected.

Recently relaunched to attract the millennials, if you’re new to whisky, Singleton is a great place to start. Light, floral, and with some smooth honey, this easy drinker packs in lots of flavour, though much of it is on the subtler side. Released this year, Maclean’s Nose is a nod to whisky legend Charles Maclean and is a standout bottle for Andy who has “bought multiple so far this year and bought for others too. A must have in any collection, the Arran 10 Year Old is an elegant expression that perfectly encapsulates the character of the island. This one was quite spicy on the nose with dried and tropical fruit (pineapple, apple syrup/maybe mango).

Loch Fyne Whiskies have many great gifting opportunities to get something special or different for a loved one. It was deep bronze in colour with a nose of candied orange slice cake decorations and perfumed almonds. With over two thousand items in our catalogue, including over 2000 single malts, we continue to be recognised as one of the market leaders in terms of our ability to acquire exceptional rare and vintage malts. There's a definite, yet subtle, smokiness too, which makes them great alongside cured ham, cheese, smoked salmon and dark chocolate, or mixed with soda and a twist of lemon over ice. This is bottled at 50% and consists of whisky matured for 8 years and then finished for 10 months in madeira casks.Hearst UK is the trading name of the National Magazine Company Ltd, 30 Panton Street, Leicester Square, London, SW1Y 4AJ.
