About this deal

It is probably my least favourite of the detachments if I’m completely honest, but I feel like some will really like it and it could see some use. For this book, some nerfs to overtuned stuff from the Index (most notably some Reanimation bonuses and Lychguard deathbricks) also hit about right, which will help with encouraging people to try a wider range of options. One of your CHARACTER units (so either a solo Character or a unit being lead) within 6” can immediately shoot at the culprit.

In this book you'll find the rules you need to play a Necrons army in games of Warhammer 40,000 – including narrative Crusade campaigns and Combat Patrol skirmishes – as well as detailed background material and stunning art showcasing their ancient origins, impossibly advanced technology, and dynastic courts. Better yet, a leader with the Osteoclave Fulcrum Enhancement can do the same, treating Strategic Reserves like an extradimensional taxi service for themselves and their bodyguard. Our current hot take is that the Canoptek Court is extremely strong, the Arisen Dynasty, Obeisance Phalanx and Hypercrypt Legion are cool and can be put to work, and the Destroyer Cult is pretty terrible. The Necrons have had a pretty good run of 10th Edition thus far, and now they’re rising from their tombs in full splendor, unleashing new detachments and updated rules to reclaim the galaxy from usurpers and old foes alike.

The army design is pretty good here, so its easy to see how people say the later incarnations ruined the feel of the army. Each one leans into a different playstyle and most favour a particular type of unit(s) from the army. Some of the big changes are the C’Tan’s not getting relics anymore but gaining a 5+ FNP in the process. We have a Destroyer Cult one, a Canoptek Court one, a Character heavy one, and a sweet Phasing one – the Hypercrypt Legion. After seeing many codex reviews, I'll preface with the "I'll ultimately wait until some game data is collected", but my gutt check so far is we took more hits than quality of life improvements. It gives me hope that things beyond just detachment and stratagem tweaks are in line for all the upcoming books. This tome is rich with the necessary rules for engaging in the diverse play modes of Warhammer 40,000, including narrative-driven Crusade campaigns and fast-paced Combat Patrol skirmishes.

You’ll also find other unique Agendas on top of your Awakening Agendas, plus Requisitions that let you meddle with your tomb world’s Systems or drive damaged troops into mechanical madness . I can’t remember the last time a Codex has had such a brilliant way of introducing new players to an army and the game.

I have been playing Warhammer 40K since the 1990s, and have won multiple national events including Adepticon and GW GTs. Both from a thematic standpoint (like, how do we have Overlords when there are no Lords to be Over, as I’ve seen others on reddit say? I’m relatively new to Necrons, picking up my first models following the Indomitus box for 9th Edition, and instantly fell for the army.

Going from S6 AP-1 to S7 AP-2 is utterly game-changing, and I expect to smash this button a lot more with the new book.Aside from the Awakening Dynasty detachment Warhammer Community have been shouting about the Hypercrypt Legion, and with good reason, because in my opinion for general army builds this is up there with the Awakening Dynasty. Having emerged from millions of years of self-imposed stasis, they now awaken from their tomb worlds, ready to assert their dominance once again. What’s different in the Codex is that a lot of the tools that buff or interact with it have been toned down to a greater or lesser extent, which will make it feel a bit less insurmountable for some armies to deal with. I didn’t like the GW statement that these rules would stay locked, and seeing them go back and adjusting units is a good thing. Not too many of these – a few Characters go up by 5pt here and there, which is extremely whatever, and the Doom Scythe also goes up by 5pts.
