About this deal

A rough, uneducated man called John Rich played a key role in the emergence of pantomime. Rich was a dancer, acrobat and mime artist and during the 1720s he was managing a theatre at Lincoln's Inn Fields. What he created was a new kind of entertainment. It combined a storyline from Ovid’s Metamorphoses and a harlequinade. This took the form of an energetic chase, featuring the adventures of Harlequin and Columbine, the commedia servants.

Augustus Harris, a dominant figure in West End theatre and often referred to as the father of modern pantomime, encouraged lavish productions and competition between British theatres. When he took over the lease of London's Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, he would put on huge spectacular annual pantomimes that ran from Easter to Christmas. Some of the pantomimes he co-wrote and staged included Little Red Riding Hood, Little Bo-Peep and Hop o' my Thumb, driven by his passion for the old Harlequinade and its lavish scenery, acrobats and clowns. The very last Harlequinade was performed at the Lyceum Theatre in 1939. The Future Of Panto Truly, a clutch of soap star of the year awards and even prizes for best dramatic exit and best nervous breakdown will only take you so far. This was where the horror came in for me. All the unnerving scuttling about and shadows? Someone in there readying to strike. And finding out who came from finding out why - and naturally everyone (except the lead) had secrets. The concept of the book was actually interesting enough and I liked exploring the different motives behind each character joining the game. One of the main characters Erin was what kept me reading, shes the only character that to me was more developed and less like a cliche. I really liked her character and reading her chapters was enjoyable. How did pantomime come to be the form of entertainment it is today? What is it that attracts us - young and old - to this bizarre medley of fairy tale, dance, jokes and song? And how did it become part of our Christmas traditions? Professor Jane Moody, Director of the Humanities Research Centre and Professor in the Department of English and Related Literature, takes us on a journey through pantomime's colourful history. Our five contestants are - naturally - not all they claim to be. From the outset we know that some of those involved are hiding things...the question is, how relevant are these secrets to what is happening in the caves during the course of the show? did I just finish this entire book in one sitting without even closing it once? Yes I did. To be honest I only did that because people always say you should always finish a horror movie before sleeping so I felt compelled to do the same with this horror book. By Victorian times, pantomime had become a key Christmas event and would include fairytales or stories of Robinson Crusoe told with a witty rhyming style and topical content. Famous names from a variety would take to the stage to perform popular songs and topical comedy. Enter The Dame You might have thought that, with all this to contend with, the last thing Carina would need is a bunch of anonymous death threats. The plot of Behind You features a mirror as the gateway to releasing a ghost or demon of sorts. You just have to say something out loud a few times while looking into the mirror. Yes, pretty much exactly like Candyman or even the girls in Paranormal Activity 3 summoning Bloody Mary.

Although this begins as a behind-the-scenes whodunnit – or, to be more exact, a who’s doing it as the body count mounts throughout – the author soon dispenses with most of the cloak and dagger stuff to place the villain of the piece front and centre. That it took place in London. So fun! And I love that the city just continued on while people were doing things. I had kind of expected, given who Anton is, that maybe he would do things so that things were more secluded, but instead it is just a big game of tag in the middle of busy London. Author Anna Kemp introduces The Hollow Hills, the sequel to her dark magical tale, Into Goblyn Wood.

Then again, this isn’t her first rodeo. She’s been acting for quite some time and Jan Broberg is definitely one of the best things about this horror movie. Jan Broberg was also in the horror movie remake Maniac from 2012 which starred Elijah Wood and Haunt (2014). She could easily have a big career as a horror icon… but not particularly thanks to Behind You. Our story begins with the commedia dell'arte tradition. The phrase means ‘comedy of the artists’ and these improvised performances took place outside in Italian streets and marketplaces. Commedia was a versatile, popular and influential art form. finally, but that's just my personal preference, i would have liked this better if there was actual paranormal involved ; the fact that the "twist"—adding quotation marks because said twist was very anticlimactic—ended up being a human murdering people disappointed me. also, i'm not sure i really understood her motives ?? that might just be me though, i didn't pay much attention during the classic "villain's monologue where they reveal their whole plan".

The story of pantomime is a tale of dragons and serpents. It features men dressed as women, and women masquerading as young men. Pantomime presents a tale of good and evil, where hope triumphs over adversity after danger and virtual despair. It has its roots in ancient Greece, and via Italy and France, insinuates itself into Britain. Pantomime's unique fusion of eccentricity, ambiguity and absurdity has much to tell us about our national identity. Christmas, for many of us, would not be Christmas without pantomime; and pantomime was the place we first discovered the magic of theatre. According to writer and caricaturist Max Beerbohm, pantomime is the only art form ever invented in England. It's a splendid witticism, albeit untrue. Pantomime has become quintessentially British: as British as Earl Grey tea or a good Indian curry. Harlequinades were tremendous fun to watch. Amazing transformations happened at the touch of Harlequin’s magic wand, with mechanical serpents and flying vehicles. Rich also introduced animal roles: dragons, ostriches, dogs and camels. Pantomime has always been fascinated by the crossing or transgression of boundaries: the pleasurable ambiguity of men dressed up as women, and the fun of animals played by human beings.I really enjoyed reading about the characters in this book and I really grew attached to them over a span of like 4 hours. One thing I will say is that this needs to be a movie asap. I thinking one of the main reasons as to why this wasn’t as scary for me was because I had imagining the scary dark caves in my head and I think if this was a movie the creepiness would come across a lot better. that wasn't the only unrealistic part of the book. i found it kind of weird how people around her were literally dying, and Lex was barely phased by it ? it would make sense if she had previously been exposed to many deaths in her life, but that wasn't the case so i was just really confused ! and the moments she did get scared, i felt like that fear wasn't described in enough detail. the author, at best, just wrote "My heart was beating really fast", but that was about it. i get that the character was a skeptical, but any normal person would be freaked out by dead bodies ! The impressive longevity of pantomime comes from its ability to evolve and not be afraid to adapt to the tastes and fashion of the time. It's why the productions we enjoy today always feel fresh, modern and relevant. Here we will explore pantomime's colourful and eclectic history. Panto’s Beginnings: Commedia dell’Arte Despite loving this book and every twist turn… I just wasn’t a fan, or not that much, of any of the characters. Well, OK, maybe Erin was a contender for someone to like, but it took me a long time to get through that wall of hers and see another Erin. Charlotte was just horrible and maybe should see a doctor? I mean, if you are so obsessed with someone to the point that you TALK with an imaginary them in PUBLIC and even make up some very sexy/swoony fanfic.. and wear a sweater with their face on it? It is time to seek help. I just wasn’t a fan of her. She was just too much OMG ANTON YESSSSSS. And then there is Grayson. Who I wasn’t that big of a fan of, but I think for me, it would have helped if instead of the jilted ex-lover he was her brother. Later on with all the things I could see it work better the way it was written, but still, it just was a bit too much for me. I guess that is the point, but still. That ending! WOW! WOW! WOW! Kind of sad the game of tag was over, but this was also fine with me. Things really got put in a rollercoaster!

Grimaldi became one of the great satirists of his age, a Clown who offered ludicrous commentaries on fashion, technology, new forms of transport, and political authority as well. Behind the clown - the real Joseph Grimaldi What British pantomime will learn from commedia is the fun of witnessing the triumph of the underdog. From the streets of Italy to the theatres of 18 th century BritainCarina, in particular, is a myopic monster of a woman, variously flattering, denigrating and even outright abusing anyone she comes across (depending on how useful or otherwise they are to helping her achieve her sole aim of returning to the spotlight). The question is always there of which real life soap matriarch she might be based upon. Their parents refuse to let them marry. Usually the father wants his daughter to wed a rich elderly man whom she despises. One of commedia’s legacies to pantomime is this archetypal clash of desires. So the lovers have to find a way of outwitting their parents—or later of defeating the baddie—to live happily ever after.
