About this deal

It stayed in the cooler ‘til the last night and he said “Have at it if you like, I might have some too.” B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars.

In the glass, Cragganmore has the color of white wine with the kind of rich substance that leans out of paleness and into gold. The nose is fragrant with spring meadow scents, heather, hay and wildflowers, mingled with a tinge of smoke, as if a fire were downwind. The Craggenmore 12 is as every bit as good as any 12 scotch 2 or 3 times it’s price, or for that matter any price. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”).

seriously this whole business of marketing scotch, wine, etc, has been elevated to absurdity, and I think the real mission of reviewers such as yourself should be exposing it to the public for what it is not perpetuating it. Cragganmore distillery has several distinctive features which mark it out against many other Speyside facilities – worm tubs, the use of lightly peated barley and spirit still which are both small and particularly flat (and also end up in worms). Cragganmore’s spirit stills are the only pair of its type in Scotland and are often singled out as responsible for the distinctive style of the whisky the distillery produces.

Taste: this has gotten a lot richer in the mouth by having taken air for a long period of time; the translation of flavours from the nose is good, but those flavours were not too remarkable to begin with. Long aired, this has become quite sweet, quite citrusy, and with more noticeable fruitiness than in the nose. At first, and for at least the first year, this was a good bit more staid and ultra-restrained. I have to give this at least 2 more points than I would have for the bottle's first year Cragganmore is part of the Classic Malts brand by Diageo. They use lightly peated malt but it doesn’t come from their own maltings anymore because But to add to the equation, there really isn’t much room for adding any great expense in making scotch – barely, water, barrels, age it…..they all do it bascially the same with the same costs. maybe a sherry barrel instead of a burbon, a little difference in labor cost, but it’s all pretty much the same. That’s not to say all scotch comes out tasting the same – it obviously doesn’t, but we can contribute that to water, processing, years, age, etc. This would be fantastic at a higher abv, but that can be experienced in the several special editions or independent bottlings available for those willing to do some sleuthing. Altogether it’s a solid bottle to start off a beginner’s journey into single malts. We’ve had the privilege of reviewing numerous special releases from Cragganmore in recent years. The humble and unassuming Speyside distillery was one of the original six in Diageo’s Classic Malts series, and has yet to receive low marks from us: a testament to both quality and consistency. So it stands to reason the flagship expression would bring equal to the table. Time to find out if this holds true.

The stills used in the second distillation (the spirit still) of Cragganmore whisky are unique in having a flat top and being relatively short. The stills' shape has a definite effect on the taste and aroma (nose) of the whisky. [7]

So than, why the big difference in price, simple marketing and to a lesser degree demand. Either of which topics are outside the scope of this conversation. Definitely grassy, with apple and vanilla the 2 dominant flavors. Again a light whiff of smoke to add balance. Very polite and easy going. 46%abv would really help things here in they way of flavor. The flavors here are quite nice and balanced, they're just weak. Nose: Sweet, floral and very traditionally Speyside. Pangs of orange peels and citrus start us off on our journey and are joined by light apples and stone fruit. The sherried elements provide toffee and caramel and are supported by delicate florals – heather and a touch of menthol. There’s a hint of ginger cake, barley and roasted nuts here which provide some additional depth.
