About this deal

What I loved most about this is how hopeful it is. Usually, dystopian sci-fi tends to be quite anxiety-inducing for me, but this wasn't at all. I can only describe the pacing as relaxed, and there was little conflict in the book. It's mainly centered around Lowrie discovering secrets about her world, and her coming to terms with being one of the last humans. It's out in Early 2019 (date to be confirmed) and I'll be revealing the cover in a few months. I really can't wait for you to meet my childhood best friends and their robot pal Mitch. You're going to love them all.

Lowrie and Shen are the last two people on earth, after an infertility crisis. The world is falling apart and they have the weight of the entire human race on their shoulders. You could feel the weight of that throughout the book. The book was just stunning. The writing was stunning and I enjoyed the story. My next book, The Quiet at the End of the World, is about Lowrie and Shen, the youngest people alive in a time after humans go infertile. They have grown up knowing that they are going to watch their species face extinction, and spend their time exploring the crumbling remains of civilisation, treasure-hunting for things their ancestors have left behind - objects like the ones in the pictures. It’s a testament to Lauren James that she manages to weave this surprise into the plot so deftly. I only guessed before it happened which doesn’t happen very often these days! All the Extras Some of the themes explored are similar to those in James' previous book, The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, where Romy copes with living alone on a ship in deep space. Here, the main character has grown up knowing that, after the small community of older people she lives in die, she and her friend Shen are going to be the last two humans on Earth, watching as humanity winds down to a close. Rep: bisexual main character, Chinese love interest, bisexual side character, trans side character. Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments Shameful confession – it’s ages since I read any UK YA. And after finishing The Quiet at the End of World, I really don’t know why. This book has everything – character, plot, pace and originality. In many ways, it reminded me of John Wyndham’s novels with soul. Lauren James has injected this SF form with emotion and diversity to create a memorable story for our times.

The idea of a deserted, crumbling London was strangely uplifting. With fewer humans, nature is starting to recover and Lowrie sees the city as her own personal playground. I absolutely loved the descriptions of the manor house she lives in with all its secret passages and sumptuous library – a bibliophile’s paradise. Lowrie’s Character Which is not easy, of course; but for all the existential burden they must carry, and they are, as you might expect, wise beyond their years, James brings them to life so vividly and so authentically, that everything about their utterly unique lives feels wholly understandable and relatable. She works as a consultant on climate storytelling for museums, production companies, major brands and publishers, with a focus on optimism and hope. She runs a Queer Writers group in Coventry. Oh, this was definitely an interesting read - science fiction may be a genre that I'm least interested in, but the writing here completely takes you in. And it's also a very quiet one - it reminded me a lot of the quote 'This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper'. Lowrie, our sixteen-year-old narrator, has a very strong head on her shoulders. She's eager to learn - eager to know - willing to change - willing to help - devoted to her family of caregivers - devoted to Shen - and always - always hopeful for a fighting chance of survival. 🤍🤍 I ADORED the structure of The Quiet at the End of the World. It was told predominantly from Lowrie’s POV, interspersed with someone’s social media status’ from when the virus broke out. I loved it. Hi friends! I’m SO excited to share this review with you. I was sent this book for free for an honest review by WalkerYA and honestly I haven’t been this excited about a book in a while. The Loneliest Girl in the Universe really blew me away so I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed by this one.Lowrie and Shen are treasure hunters, and I really loved this aspect as I found it fascinating what they could potentially be finding in the flooded underground and on the riverbank of the Thames. It was so very imaginative. Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.) My favourite book of 2018, The Quiet at the End of the World is the stunning new book from Lauren James. I've loved all of her books so far, but I think this is my favourite -- Lowrie and Shen are two of the most loveable characters you could wish to meet, and I had a very big soft-spot for Mitch. Frankly, this isn’t great. In a time when women still only make up 23% of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) workforce, there need to be better role models for the aspiring girls in the audience. I did have an idea about how the story would play out, but even as my thoughts were confirmed, I enjoyed it and felt it was nicely written.
