About this deal

Usagi waited as the dog yokai entered the large red door to Big Mama’s office, speaking to her in hushed tones. He waved Usagi inside Big Mama’s office. “She’ll see you now.” Hard-hitting yet still hopeful, this is an emotional powerhouse of a book’ Alexandra Sheppard, author of Oh My Gods' The book, Jawando said, was “so hard to write”. “For a long time, I thought it was really terrible,” she said. “I lost a lot of confidence with this book.” She said she was “really honoured” to win the prize.

Beautifully and emotionally written, Danielle does not let you down with this immense story. A story, that it would seem, is becoming more and more frequent in this day and age. The workshop Danielle gave was thoroughly enjoyable - using a picture to inspire creative writing is a different and easier way to inspire me! Thank you Danielle!' A powerful coming-of-age story about chance encounters, injustice and how the choices that we make can completely change our future. The second YA novel from the critically acclaimed Danielle Jawando, perfect for fans of Angie Thomas, Gayle Foreman, Jennifer Niven and Nikesh Shukla. Still, Jawando shows us how so many still do their best, living with their heads high, despite the many injustices. It brings to mind Michelle Obama’s statement of “When they go low, we go high.” It still stinks, but I cannot help but be filled with pride, seeing how the three characters in the book take the high road and live their lives the best they can. prolly my last read of January. am getting busy with final assignments and other stuff afterwards! anyway, im so excited to talk about this. The Hidden City had offered him multiple chances to be all sorts of things. A magic wielding yokai. A waiter at a hot dog restaurant. A warrior. But of all those things, Usagi had turned to the Battle Nexus. Usagi was a samurai, born and trained to fight. He had chosen to leave his old life in Japan behind, but he hadn’t turned away from fighting. That’s why he had left, actually. To find a reasonable sensei to train him. It didn’t get him anything good but a taste for fighting dirty. Nobody had wanted to take up the sad rabbit from nowhere. Nobody cared about his family name. They just didn’t want to train him. Too brash. Too arrogant. Won't ever get anywhere in life. As time went on, Usagi grew to care less about what he had been told as a child. You need a Sensei, Usagi. Psh, yeah right. Usagi grew angry, got into a few fights, and next thing he knew he was looking to become someone. He wanted his name to be known. When Our Worlds Collided allows us an insight into the lives of three teenagers brought together under some terrible circumstances. The film itself is a fine piece of work. As a child in the 50's, I was fascinated by this movie and others by George Pal. As well as a writer, Alabanza is also a performance artist, and in 2017 they became the youngest recipient of an artist residency at the Tate. Their debut show, Burgerz, won the Edinburgh fringe total theatre award in 2019. Not to mention, he could die if he didn’t. He shuddered. He really didn’t want to die. He had come this far.

This such a wonderful book that provides insight into the reasons why we still need to highlight the issue of racism, especially in the post BLM world we live in. I really enjoyed this novel and I've also bought a copy so my own teenage daughter can enjoy it too. A raw, unflinching and powerful story that will stay with me for a long time’ Manjeet Mann, author of The Crossing With regards to this particular upload there are 2 major issues. One the aspect ratio is wrong. When Worlds Collide was filmed,it was in 1.37:1 (also known as 4:3). It was not in widescreen as shown in this upload. Also the sound is bad. Danielle Jawando is an author and screenwriter. Her debut YA novel, And the Stars Were Burning Brightly, won best senior novel in the Great Reads Award and was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, the YA Book Prize, the Jhalak Children's & YA Prize, the Branford Boase Award and was longlisted for the CILIP Carnegie Medal, the UKLA Book Awards and the Amazing Book Awards. Her previous publications include the non-fiction children's book Maya Angelou (Little Guides to Great Lives), the short stories Paradise 703 (long-listed for the Finishing Line Press Award) and The Deerstalker (selected as one of six finalists for the We Need Diverse Books short story competition), as well as several short plays performed in Manchester and London. Her second YA novel, When Our Worlds Collided, was published in March 2022. Danielle has also worked on Coronation Street as a storyline writer. IN-PERSON WORKSHOPS AND VISITS These are three very different teens, but they’ve all been exposed to their own trauma or struggles, they’re all at a key moment in their lives as they prepare for their GCSEs, and most importantly, they’ve all been affected by racism. Passing comments, treatment by police, expectations at school and that’s only a few. But things come to ahead following the stabbing.

Fellow judge Irfan Master said the book stood out for its “craft, courage and connection”, while Yaba Badoe, also judging, said “every teenager” should read the book.

Fine, fine,” Usagi mumbled, pushing himself out of bed and following the yokai out the door. They walked through the hallways, all the way up to Big Mama’s office. Usagi didn’t go in there much. If anything, Big Mama came to him, or she sent her minions (she hated it when he used that word) to deliver whatever she was going to say. Going to Big Mama’s office was either a privilege or a death sentence. Literally. Usagi had seen people escorted to her office and never come out. Sure hope that’s not what we’re meeting for, she could have at least fed me before she kills me. Usagi would start there then, as soon as Draxum gave him the okay. Speaking of which…”How do I communicate with you?” Usgai asked Draxum.

Spying was hard work. You had to blend in, and Usagi wasn’t sure how well he could blend in with a group of seemingly delinquent turtle teens. “How exactly am I getting to them? I mean, it’s not like they’re gonna trust me right away.” Cats: An incredible novel all round! Most probably a new favourite. I'll re-read and highly recommend.

Brilliantly written, and something more people should read. I've already passed the copy on to my daughter.I feel I know these issues, but even then, as I read, different things kept on being lit like little flares of SOS or distress. People who look like me and Shaq, we're never seen as whe we are-kids. We're never even seen as being human." Sometimes, to begin to understand a situation which happens with terrifying regularity, a fictional account allows you far more insight than a bland newspaper article or television news report. Author Danielle Jawando has written a novel which gives you this opportunity through the eyes of those most intimately involved when a teenage boy is fatally stabbed for no discernible reason. It resonates on what is happening now and gets you thinking on how the police deal with matters that are very close to home and what is currently in the news. Usagi crossed his arms. “You want me to become his best friend? Easy. I’m very likable.” Big Mama snorted, and Usagi pretended not to hear.
