On 7 March 1936 German troops re-occupied the Rhineland, a de-militarised zone according to the Treaty of Versailles. This action was directly against the terms which Germany had accepted after the First World War. This move, in terms of foreign relations, threw the European allies, especially France and Britain, into confusion. What should they do about it?It’s been rumoured for months, but Ziggy and Dean’s upcoming exit from Home and Away has finally been confirmed. I appreciated the small references included in the book as it was set in my local area I could relate easily. For example the chip shop that sold ice cream on the sea front, that’s where we get ours! I started out in administration and then moved jobs until finally I was working as a dealer in a commercial bank. Eventually I was promoted to Chief Dealer (the first female CD in the country). I traded lots of different things – foreign exchange, swaps, options, bonds…all of the kind of things you read about in the papers and that sound very technical and difficult. Of course once you’re doing it, it’s not half as technical as it sounds. This is such a heartwarming book with themes of loss, families and shows how differently people handle their grief.

There’s romance and a traditional love story here, but more than that there’s an exploration of love in many forms. Sheila O’Flanagan presents to perfection the ways love can shape us both positively and negatively, how it can consume and overwhelm us, and how it can make us behave totally unselfishly and in the worst ways imaginable. What Eden Did Next also looks at family, community and friendship and makes the reader feel included and heartened. Reports this week linked Karim Benzema with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia but Ancelotti says he has "no doubts" the striker will stay. Andy's family remain a big part of Eden and Lila's life, and as time passes and Eden grows in strength, she begins to realise that putting Andy on a pedestal as his mother always does, is not helping her to move on. I felt inclined toward violence at their somewhat irrational behaviour and unreasonable expectations of Eden. The conniving manipulation measures that were used angered me immensely! Yes, I realize these were mainly done from a place of pain and I know they convinced themselves (and Eden) that they only had her best interests at heart, but the level of self-absorbtion and selfishness this all amounted to just made me so mad!

Home and Away has introduced two new characters in the ongoing Andrew saga, as we meet Margot and get our first mention of Tegan. But Eden is not the shy, weak wallflower that her mother-in-law Valerie and sister-in-law Michelle would prefer her to be. She has created a life for herself and Lila in the home that she and Andy shared. She’s got a job she loves as a carer, a hobby as a calligrapher, which is fast proving to be quite lucrative. She really does appreciate the help she gets from Valerie who looks after Lila while she works, but it does concern her that she needs to rely on her so much. Changes could be afoot at the club this summer given their 11-point deficit to champions Barcelona. There’s a new arrival in Summer Bay next week, as Tane’s cousin Kahu makes his first appearance – but why is Felicity suspicious? Eden Hall is a professional nurse turned care giver and calligraphy artist. Her career took a dramatic turn when Andy, her firefighter husband, was killed when a building collapsed. Her biggest regret was she never told him she had just discovered she was pregnant with their first child. Now five years later, she is still mourning his death and is raising Lila, her daughter, with the support of Andy’s family.

Furthermore, the social dynamics within Eden’s community and family were an intriguing element of the story that became increasingly more complicated as the relationship between Eden and Rafe progressed. O’Flanagan does well to create complex yet relatable family dynamics between her characters that accurately demonstrate the emotional stress that families are put under in times of loss and immense grief. The cast of characters in this novel primarily consists of Eden’s in-laws, Rafe’s close family, and the residents of the small, close-knit community of Sycamore Grove. As to be expected, both Eden’s in-laws and Rafe’s close family are fearful of their budding relationship, as they believe that they are only bonding over their similar traumatic pasts. Eden’s in-laws are particularly cynical and fearful of this relationship; Andy’s mother and sister worry that Eden will move on from the memory of her husband and start a new life away from them, taking with her the only living piece of Andy they have left. Even five years after the loss of their family member, it is clear that there remains residual tension and whatever boundaries that remain between Eden and Andy’s family are unstable. This portrayal of complicated family dynamics in the wake of sudden, tragic loss is incredibly well done, and, while I think the story may have benefitted from the first-person, I admire how O’Flanagan takes the time to give every character’s perspective via the third-person point of view. We take a look at the new faces set to arrive on Home and Away later this year, as well as those who’ll be leaving Summer Bay in 2023. This was such an enjoyable book and I couldn't put it down. The story really focused on the healing of both Eden and Rafe, but particularly Eden who had lost her spark after all the tragedy. It was lovely to see Eden's development. The book had a fabulous cast of side characters who bought a lot of laughs, especially Rafe's nosy neighbours and their WhatsApp group chats. This week on Home and Away in Australia, a new detective arrives in Summer Bay and demands that Cash stop digging into Dana’s case. Just what is Detective Madden hiding? Plus, Rose meets Samuel, the man she believes is her biological father. Monday’s supersized Season Final will see Tane and Felicity’s wedding day arrive, but things take a dramatic turn as two crashes bring the year to a close.
