About this deal

It is an ideal choice for riders who seek a thrilling riding experience, along with the convenience and efficiency of a scooter. The 1st free service is offered after 1000 Kms from the date of purchase, or after 30 days from the date of purchase, whichever is earlier.

Its aggressive and angular bodywork gives it a sporty and dynamic appearance, while also optimizing aerodynamics for better performance. While there’s a generously sized footbrake, it would be nice to see a handlebar brake too, just for extra control as you can pick up speed. The fairing around the front of the scooter is also designed to channel air around the rider, reducing turbulence and improving stability. For performance, the 1986 and 1987 Aero 50’s are the best years because of their features and because of the potential to upgrade them to gain more speed.

While it’s more for enjoyment than getting from A to B, it’s a physical workout, which our teenage tester highly rated. As this is a lean-and-steer scooter, it’s a natural process for little ones when learning the ropes. These scooters are very reliable so all you may need to do is get some fresh gas and oil in it, change the plug, maybe clean the carb and get a new battery and you’ll be set for years of fairly reliable scootering.

The central spine of the bike runs high along the floorboard, which is not flat in shape and therefore, space is limited. The earlier gauges have a neat vintage look to them (below left) that is reminiscent of Honda’s mopeds, whereas the newer gauges (below right) are well laid out but have a less unique look. The wheels are also made from a plastic rather than rubber, so we can predict wear and tear being an issue long term. While it doesn’t fold, or have flashy lights, it does show learners the basics with its lean-to-steer design, which is a great way to instill confidence.

That’s not really long distance touring material, but you could use the rear rack to carry a jerry can. Unlike some similar scooters, there’s just the one rear footbrake on this model, so you don’t get the extra reassurance from the handbrake. For the ’86-’87 models you can get big bore kits up to 47mm bore (65cc), intakes, reeds, carbs and even gears. We were dubious that it was just about the fun factor but were pleased to see that functionality hasn’t been overlooked.

It’s recommended for use by those aged six years plus, as you can adjust the height options between 85cm and 95cm, but we’d suggest closer to double figures in age because it’s quite a substantial scooter, and you can pick up speed fast. The trick, as our 13-year-old demonstrated, is to swing your waist and hips left and right, in turn. We’d like to see a little more padding on the handles but we all appreciated the smooth, slightly curved edges of the footplate, which helps when the scooter inevitably ends up in contact with your shins. This initial generation of the Aero 50’s used a similar engine design to the Honda Spree, but the Aero 50 utilized a multi-ratio variator to put the power to the rear wheel, whereas the Spree used an inferior single speed design.
