About this deal

What We Love: It’s a no-frills hair straightener that’s easy to use, thanks to its light weight and simple features. What We Love: The steam function helps prevent heat damage, managing to straighten even the curliest hair without causing harm. What We Don’t Love: The temperature can only be adjusted by dial, and it was often unclear what temperature we were on.

We were a little dismayed to find ourselves going over sections multiple times, as this might counter any protective benefits from the aforementioned features, but the GHD finish was still as glossy as you’d hope for the price. The straightener heats up in exactly 15 seconds and automatically switches off after 30 minutes, just in case you forget. What We Love: With smooth plates and an ergonomic design, this iron cut our styling time in half and created long-lasting looks. It takes the concept of the original Babyliss models and gives it a modern twist. Floating ceramic plates infused with keratin, argan and coconut oils, as well as ionic technology, help create a glossy, smooth finish. It uses so-called “intelligent heat control” to regulate the temperature across these plates and reduce hair damage. You can then choose from one of six temperatures (150ºC, 170ºC, 190ºC, 210ºC, 220ºC and 230ºC) and from one of three modes ( No Steam, Low Steam and High Steam). The straighteners will then automatically switch off after an hour. What We Love: The flat iron gave us super straight hair in one swipe while its cordless design made for easier styling.Ionic technology: when there’s too much positive charge on each hair strand, they begin to repel each other, making hair static and flyaway. This technology helps to neutralise the charge, smoothing strands down instead. In the Good Housekeeping Institute lab, our experts used a Bossa Nova Shuffle machine to assess how long their style lasted and how much frizz was created in a humid environment.

The Air Strait has all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a luxury Dyson flat iron-style tool: a bright LED screen, pre-set temperatures for wet and dry styling, and zero wait time for the tool to heat up. One of the highlights for us was noticing the pre-set wet styling temperatures (175 degrees, 230 degrees, and 285 degrees) were significantly lower than the temps for dry styling (250 degrees, 285 degrees, and Boost — which goes up to 320 degrees and is recommended only for touch-ups). We appreciated the preemptive defense against heat damage, and the settings were easy to adjust. Ceramic-coated plates: they usually have a metal base topped with a ceramic layer, combining the best qualities of both materials. The outer layer can chip and wear away over time, but a good-quality model should last you at least three years if stored properly.

What’s the best hair straightener to buy in 2021?

To find the best hair straightener around, we spent dozens of hours carefully selecting the most popular flat irons to test. We first conducted a test in our New York City-based Lab under the guidance of expert hairstylists with decades of experience. Next, each InStyle editor took a hair straightener home to integrate into their routine over the next four weeks, rating the tool on how easy it was to use, as well as it's design features, like an automatic shut-off or innovative heat-detecting technology, We also noted the length of time it took to style our hair and how long the final result lasted. The flat irons that earned our top scores are featured on this list. London-based hairstylist Hollie Rose Clarke says ions in hair tools keep the cuticle layer of your hair smooth, so you'll get a shinier, frizz-free result. “Think of a strand of your hair as being the size of my arm, covered in fish scales (the cuticles)," she says. "When the hair is damaged, they open slightly, resulting in dry, frizzy, and weak hair. When the hair is healthy they are closed, resulting in your hair feeling smoother and stronger.” Since curly hair can be more prone to frizz and, let’s face it, generally requires some extra maintenance to keep it in top shape, we sought a flat iron that would be gentle on our delicate coils while still giving us the straight look we want. This Hot Tools iron gets the job done: The smooth plates and curved edges seemed like they were designed just for our hair as the rounded surfaces made for bouncy curls, rather than sharp crimps we sometimes see in more rectangular options, and they swiftly tamed those pesky baby flyways close to our faces. With our hair woes solved, our one wish is an automatic shut off, but given all of its other great features we can let this con slide. Want to get that salon feeling every time you leave the house but don’t want to put in the extra work? The cult favorite from Drybar just got an upgrade, and it’s here to give you the perfect blowout from anywhere. The oval shape adds extra bounce to your tresses, and its ionic technology protects each strand from the heat. Easy to use and lightweight to hold, you can cover your whole head with shine and volume and adjust the temperature based on your preferences.
