About this deal

The large number of high matrix values probably reflects a large volume of sales of stereo copies which occurred towards the end of the six-eye label period. The instruments sit in the very space that we know them to be in (which sounds obvious but is far from always being the case). But anyway, here we are on side 2, which brings me to the second notable feature: Adderley and Coltrane have swapped sides. Many tracks use the "Decca tree" configuration, invented by engineers in the early 1950's using 3 Neumann M50 microphones. Or by affirming that, every year, it sells tens of thousands of copies more than five decades after its original release. We've graced this first-time-ever 2LP edition of this musical masterpiece with a gatefold sleeve with additional liner notes. Recap (information taken from various engineering gurus) : 1959 is very early in the history of stereo. The fabled acoustics of Boston’s Symphony Hall and the magnificent tonal hues of the Boston Pops are on full display on this fanciful and festive recording.

As you mentioned, title listing and Adderley spelling on the cover are incorrect across all my copies of KoB, including PC8163. I have a standard cd, a hi res copy and a Japanese cd all 3 have some kind of annoying distortion in different parts of the saxophone. I’ve multiple versions of KOB on vinyl, CD and Hi Res I’m not home so cannot list them all at the minute but my favourite is the Analogue Productions UHQR Vinyl copy though I do still listen to other copies too for different reasons like the RSD Mono version and also the 1963 stereo version again for different reasons. Therefore, unlike recent uber-fi vinyl reissues that were sourced from the original 3-track session tapes (which was the extent of multi-track recording at that time), this is NOT a remix. Side 2 songs are corrected but not left center instead top line is off center or indented while song 2 is non indented. Columbia’s 30th Street studios then used four tape decks simultaneously: a prime mono deck and a mono safety backup deck, a prime three-channel deck and three track safety backup deck, for stereo. Compared with the audiophile UHQR issue mentioned above they’re further forward and closer to the listener, more like you’re sitting just in front of the stage rather than somewhere further back in the auditorium. However this tape sounds just right, which prompted me to ask mastering engineer Pietro Benini about it.

To explain, I’m going to repeat some of what I already mentioned in a previous section, but bear with me as I think it’s worth repeating (not least because the aforementioned pros had to repeat it to me a good few times before I finally relinquished my long-cherished position on the matter! An audiophile favorite from the day it was issued, Kind of Blue takes on nirvanic sonic proportions via Mobile Fidelity's reissue. In late 1958, after some eight months, Bill Evans – the only white member of Miles’ group – left the lineup and was replaced by Wynton Kelly. Expertly remastered by Kevin Gray, lacquer plating by master technician Gary Salstrom, heavy cardboard gatefold jacket with vibrantly reproduced original artwork. Benny Golson, who came to the attention of the jazz public with Tadd Dameron's band and Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra, was a member of the Jazztet — the group he had formed with Art Farmer — at the time of this recording.
