Russell Lissack has forsaken that overdone hallmark of post-punk, brittle tortured-fretboard skronk, in favour of an effects-laden guitar sound that adds genuine prettiness to Bloc Party's edgy rush. This Modern Love", "Blue Light" and latest single "So Here We Are" are three of the gentlest, most touching ballads to come out of London in a long time.As dynamic as Silent Alarm is, it’s not perfect: Kele Okereke’s yelpy vocals get a little grating on the less melodic songs, and the second half of the album doesn’t quite sustain the momentum it had at the beginning, although the bonus remixes of “Plans” by Mogwai, and “Pioneers”” by M83 help make up for this. VG+ (Very Good Plus): This record has clearly been played before, but has only a moderate reduction in sound quality, despite a possible slight loss of shine and some surface marks.
