About this deal

I’ve also enjoyed seeing my tutor, Simon Hales, competing in the premier climbing competitions at The Arb Show. It’s great to see people climb who are at the top of their game, using lots of different techniques. It inspires you to be better and try different things. I know women will play an important role in forestry as we increase tree planting to help nature’s recovery, grow the UK’s timber provision, combat the effects of climate change and reach net zero by 2050.

Jo: Not to be defeated. I am a competitive person but you have to learn that defeat actually makes you a much stronger person. Learn from every mistake you make and don't dwell on what has been. I also use the skills I have learnt at competitions at work which means I can constantly improve and develop my techniques while making my job easier at the same time. Women in Trees made us happy—and hungry for more. So Hatje Cantz asked the obsessive collector Raiss if he might have some more of “the goods,” and he did. He has, after all, spent 25 years searching for and finding anonymous masterpieces such as these, which is why we now have More Women in Trees: how can you possibly get enough of them? In a photo from the first volume, a woman poses with a pillow propped behind her head, as if she’ll remain on her chosen branch so long she’ll end up napping there. Her expression is defiant and ambitious: a desire to push the limits, even if she is most likely setting herself up for a painful fall. For the brute truth about humans in trees is that we cannot last there; gravity will bring a person down eventually. Inherent in every escape into a tree is the pending question of descent and how much humility it will demand. “Being a woman has only bothered me in climbing trees,” declared Frances Perkins, the first female cabinet member in American history. Perkins served as FDR’s secretary of labor from 1933 to 1945, the same era as the women in the photographs.I think the biggest challenge for me so far was thinking about getting my first job. Being female, I was worried about that employer’s attitudes might be towards me, especially considering this can be a very physically demanding industry. Thankfully, I didn’t come across that and, in fact, being part of a team made up of different people, with different strengths and weaknesses, meant it hasn’t been a problem, we work together to get the job done. I’m not saying we need to recruit more women regardless of abilities or suitability to particular roles. As I flipped through ninety photographs of well-dressed German women posing in trees for men, the subtle differences in their gestures and expressions became increasingly potent and compelling. What did they shrug off and accept, and what did they question? Did the two women in floral dresses posing in a fallen tree’s large and twisted roots come into adulthood while Hitler was in power? One of them is smiling winsomely for whoever is behind the camera. But the other has turned her face away. Her gaze is solemn and fixed on something in the distance that remains beyond the frame. Sharon: The Ankerwyke Yew. It has it all: historical importance, beauty, age, reliance, public interest, biological fascination ('It's how old? Wow!'). And it brings people together.

Idra Novey is an award-winning poet and translator and the author of the novels Ways to Disappear and Those Who Knew , which is forthcoming in November. What picture do these words create in your mind: “… sun bury its feet in shadow…”? What could the poet mean by the sun’s ‘feet?’ The poem “The Trees” by Adrienne Rich is a metaphor which compares the trees to women. The poet is a feminist and highlights the desire of women to be free and go out in the open. The trees want to free themselves from the floor of the house and go in the open forest. They are cramped in the houses and their feelings can be felt and heard by the poet. They point to guidance such as the Education and Employers Taskforce (EET), the 'Inspiring Women' campaign and the Women’s Business Council. Well, things are improving, but does more need to be done? She won the ISA ITCC in 2008, in 2010 and again in 2014. This year, Jo came an impressive close 2nd in the ITCC. This closely followed her win in this summer's Women's Masters at the UK Open Tree Climbing Competition in July.

Sharon: They know who they are. More generally, anyone who openly shares information and encourages others to get involved and feel empowered. I am so grateful for the friendship of other wonderful female arbs. Sharon: I run my own consultancy practice - Sharon Hosegood Associates Ltd, based in Chelmsford. We provide services to the construction industry, large landowners, pressure groups and I practise as an expert witness. I am also involved with a community tree project for Epping Forest District Council. I work with Lloyd Bore with the new TreeRadar. Having my own practice has given me more freedom to try new things. However, according to this study, the following figures show the total number of workers within trees and timber organisations but not necessarily employees working in trees and timber roles (e.g. the figures include administrators). The sequel is in no way inferior to its predecessor: the unique collection of historical amateur photographs, assembled and curated by the artist Jochen Raiß, feature a phenomenon that is presented in both a humorous and loving manner: young women posing in trees. The Forestry Commission has a number of routes into exciting, innovative and important forestry roles for women to help support its plans to expand, protect and improve our forests, woods and trees. Applications are open to join the forestry Degree-level Apprenticeship Programme in 2023 – a first-of-its-kind initiative to foster a growing, highly skilled and diverse workforce within the forestry sector. We have also launched the Forestry Training Fund, making free government-funded short courses available for people considering a change of career or those who are seeking to build and diversify their skills in forestry, teaching skills like chainsaw maintenance, coppicing, woodland management, and marketing and selling timber. Thankfully, the 1987 storm gave me an opportunity to gain experience, working as a self-employed climber developing my skills at my own pace with a team of like-minded people. There was a great deal of work around at the time, coupled with a buoyant economy, so many of the teams working in the south-east would share work and I would be given some of the more delicate jobs to complete. Other women in the photographs look uneasy about straddling a branch in a hitched-up skirt, annoyed at having to endure the rough bark against their bare legs. In one image, the male photographer is standing close enough for his long shadow to fall eerily over the trunk of the tree, a shadow as large as the woman herself. What’s fascinating about viewing so many amateur images of the same curious phenomenon is the chance to guess from the women’s expressions and gestures what this fleeting moment of mischievousness a few feet off the ground meant to them, if it meant anything at all.I found my middle-year college placement quite tough; I had been accepted on the BTEC diploma course at Merrist Wood with previous experience in the nursery industry, combined with a short course in climbing, so my first year at college was a bit of a challenge. I hadn't really mastered climbing, needed to develop my skills further and often felt way behind the lads on my course. Tree climbing competitions and championships are held internationally and there are a growing number of competitions, competitors and spectators every year. The first competition I ever watched was nearly 20 years ago and there was only one female competitor. Of course she came top of her class! She was impressive, strong and fast, perhaps appearing even more so as she was brave enough to go solo when women entering tree climbing competitions were a rarity. If I knew her name, I would properly salute her true pioneering skills. This year 20 female competitors entered the ISA International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC) in San Antonio, Texas, compared to 44 male competitors. Things are certainly changing. Nowadays, women are more comfortable competing in what can still be considered a male-dominated industry, and women are also more accepted in that role than 20 years ago.

Lisa: You are well liked, respected and appreciated by both members of the LTOA and non-members. What are the secrets to your success? The phrase ‘taking a shot’ immediately turns these women into birds, observed and hunted by an anonymous presence, taking refuge in the canopy. What seemed at first glance to be joyful reclamations of a childhood freedom and playfulness now seem to be something else entirely. What power this unknown cameraperson – probably camera man – wields. How do we provide support networks for young females who are unsure about entering a male-dominated profession or progressing within it?Does the poem present a conflict between man and nature? Compare it with A Tiger in the zoo. Is the poet suggesting that plants and trees, used for ‘interior decoration’ in cities while forests are cut down, are ’imprisoned’ and need to ‘break out’? Consider also the sinister origins of the swing – an everyday object that symbolises carefree childhood games, but which apparently comes from the story of Erigone, who hanged herself in the pine tree under which her murdered father, Icarius, was buried. She cursed many young girls to be hanged in the tree until justice for her father was done. Her story was celebrated in the ‘Vintage Festival’, with offerings to Erigone and her Icarius, masks hanging from trees and girls on swings beneath the branches. In this story the tree becomes a weapon rather than another state of being. This story reminded me of writer Sue Townsend recounting how as an 8-year old girl she witnessed the brutal murder of a young girl whilst she was high up in the branches of a tree. She had hidden up there watching the girl die against the tree trunk, frozen with fear, before trying to alert an adult. Ans: The poet did not mention the departure of the forest from her house because it is a part of human nature to ignore the important matters of their life. We all know that trees are so important for our survival on earth. But still human beings are cutting them for making profits without even thinking of the aftermath.
